Darkly floral and earthy in character, the 2021 Rosso di Montalcino Gauggiole opens with notes of crushed rocks, ground ginger, rosemary and sour cherry. This is round and wonderfully juicy in character. A tinge of minerality up front adds tension as ripe wild berry fruits cascade throughout. Long and perfumed, this finishes lightly structured and classically dry.

On the nose, sweet tobacco balances the medicinal tang of blackberries, top soil, wild fennel and eucalyptus. The palate is peppery and spicy, with lots of earth and herbs, but a hint of vanilla emerges to bring out the sweetness of the berries. A fresh, precise wine.
