Aromas of sweet blackberries, cherries, graphite and plums. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated on the palate but not too heavy, showing blueberry flavors with an undercurrent of earthiness and chalk. Mouth-filling tannins and a touch of baking spices. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon The McNab comes from an estate 371-acre vineyard once planted to many varieties that is now a majority Cabernet Sauvignon, the star here, blended with 20% Petite Sirah. With only 200 cases made, it’s given more than a year’s aging in French oak, 40% new. Ripe and full-bodied, it’s not overtly concentrated, offering silky tannins and moderate blueberry and plum fruit around a dusty texture that flirts with graphite, mushroom, pencil shavings, and cacao nib. Already aged several years in barrel and bottle, drink now through 2031.

This project is from a long-standing leader in Mendocino County, who has helped spear head organics and sustainable farming for decades. I appreciate that more producers are honoring the Bordeaux varietals traditionally grown in the valley. These wines are robust, elegant, and filled with vibrant fruit. Aromas are notes of Dark berries, plum, sage, mushroom, toasty vanilla, and florals on the nose. The flavors are rich: blueberry, Boysenberry, orange peel, Bay leaf, and mocha, with a supple, long finish.
