The 2021 Santenots chez Glantenay is a classic example of this fine vineyard, with a very black fruity and soil-driven personality. The lovely bouquet wafts from the glass in a mix of cassis, black plum, raw cocoa, a complex base of dark soil tones, currant leaf, pigeon, a touch of vanillin oak and a lovely topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and complex, with a lovely core of fruit, fine transparency and grip, suave tannins and a long, perfectly balanced and elegant finish. First class Santenots!

The 2021 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru was a bit bashful on the nose but opens with modest aeration, darker fruit than the Bouillard and slightly more herbaceous yet fresh and focused. The palate is grainy in texture, strict and compact, though missing the roundness and pliancy that I seek in a Santenots.

Relatively dense crimson purple. A little nutty note with the dark red fruit. The palate though is richer than the preceding wines, with almost a sucrosity, reined in by the more mineral aspect behind. Light peppery finish. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted Oct 2022.
