The 2021 Volnay “Clos des Chênes” from Domaine Glantenay is also stunning this year. The wine has a lovely blend of red and black fruit on the nose, wafting from the glass in a mix of red plums, red and black cherries, gamebird, raw cocoa, currant leaf, a touch of violet, just a hint of oak and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and mineral-driven, with a great core of fruit, lovely focus, tangy acids and a long, complex and ripely tannic finish of superb balance and purity. Another stellar wine.

Always a little riper and richer, so tasted last. Two barrels made. Glowing red fruit here, more raspberry, fills the middle and back of the palate, very lightly volatile, with tannin and acidity to finish. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted Oct 2022.

The 2021 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a well-defined nose with brambly red fruit, briary and light mulch-like scents, bashful at first but soon finding its voice. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little chalky in texture and very linear towards a finish that lacks a bit of substance. But I appreciate its freshness.
