I do not know why the les Saussilles has not jumped out to me in previous visits to the Glantenay cellars, but the 2021 certainly did so and I will not make the mistake of overlooking this beautiful wine any longer! The wine offers up a very refined, red fruity bouquet of cherries, pomegranate, blood orange, pigeon, a lovely base of chalky soil, woodsmoke and just a touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and deep at the core, with lovely soil signature and grip, ripe, fine-grained tannins and a long, complex and seamlessly balanced finish. This is properly reserved and will need time to hibernate in the cellar, but it is going to be a super bottle once it is ready to drink!

The 2021 Pommard Les Saucilles 1er Cru, which was partly pulled up in 2016, comes exclusively from old vines. It offers crunchy red fruit on the nose, a little darker than the Volnays, with a strong marine influence and touches of black olive compote. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red and black fruit, powdery in texture with a crisp, saline finish. Enjoy this over the next 10-12 years.

Bought in 1968 by Thierry’s grandfather when the vines were already old. Other evidence points probably to 1922 as the planting date. Clear bright ruby, less dense than Santenots, a more austere nose. Then a richer weight and slightly darker fruit behind, less peppery, with a balanced structure. Two barrels made. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted Oct 2022.
