Broad, rich and expressive, this polished red exudes cherry and raspberry fruit, graphite, earth and underbrush aromas and flavors. Powerful, with a thick swath of tannins flexing their grip on the finish, plus vibrant acidity. One of the more backward 2021s, this needs time. Best from 2030 through 2050. 262 cases made, 66 cases imported.

From vines planted in 1965, the 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino Vigna Del Suolo displays a youthful red color and is seductive, revealing woven, layered notes of fresh leather, preserved cherries, blood orange, lavender, and dried Mediterranean herbs and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it captures a vibrant spine of acidity, well-defined tannins, snappy salinity, and mineral underpinnings. It benefits from some air on opening, and I anticipate it will improve quite a bit over the next 6-12 months. It’s nervous and tense in structure and built to last. Drink 2026-2050.

Almost Burgundy-like, with strawberry, cherry and sandalwood aromas. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins yet a firm and crunchy finish. Holding on tight now. Better after 2028.

Above ground, Vigna del Suolo doesn’t look much different from the surrounding plots on Argiano’s extensive plateau. Below ground, however, it is distinguished by a distinctive limestone-rich vein. And, in 2021, those 65-plus-year-old vines amp up the volume. Exotic spice notes of nutmeg, cardamom and coriander soar from the glass. The red cherry depth just about reaches its tipping point of concentration before citrusy, blood-orange acidity penetrates the core. Plush tannins girdle, ultimately cinching tightly. Cocoa tinges the finish with pleasant bitterness.
