A marker of great cabernet is being seduced by the aromas and flavours, which need to be in harmony: everything tucked in neatly, and let’s not forget beautiful tannins matched to fine acidity. Does this fall into that class? Too right it does. Varietal flavours are pitch-perfect and not quite understated, this is cabernet after all, and the result is a certain elegance and class. A gorgeous rendition.

Vasse Felix's self-titled middle range often represents the best value for money, in this reviewer's opinion. This is both an excellent example of the range's quality as well as of Margaret River's distinctive Cab style. Layered aromas of tangy redcurrant, raspberry and cranberry are woven with pencil lead, new pavement and tobacco leaf. There's a wonderful lift of crunchy currant fruit on the palate, which counterbalances the big smudgy, savory tannins. Drink now-2030.

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon is both earthy and mineral on the nose, with gravel and petrichor, graphite and iodine, raspberry, nori, layers of pomegranate molasses and black cherry. The wine reveals its 2020 vintage roots via the compact framework of tannin and lush red/purple core of fruit. Through the finish, it is possessed of two things in harmony: savory, chewy/ductile/agile tannins and a red jubey character. Awesome. It makes for luscious drinking. These wines age tremendously, and at $55 AUD a bottle, they represent sensational value for the money in the cellaring space. This is another great release. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
