"2020 is an exceptional vintage for the Northern Rhone"

Jeb Dunnuck

Kicking off our Private Offer Rhone Week with a bang, the stunning 96 pt. 2020 Tardieu Laurent Hermitage boasts a bright, brambly core of rich, savory Syrah fruit of exceptional depth and power, a textbook Hermitage for Northern Rhone fans and collectors offering impressive quality and longevity, secured at rock bottom pricing through our decades’ long relationships in the region and simply unrivalled at this price.

Excited post-Covid for the opportunity to sample exceptional wines with the talented people who craft them, I was simply blown away recently when tasting through the Tardieu Laurent lineup with winemaker Bastien Tardieu, son of founder Michel Tardieu, the Tardieu wines accurately summed up by Jeb Dunnuck as “rich, textured, yet pure and impeccably made.” As a negociant in the region for over two decades, founder Michel Tardieu has built a network of long-term, “handshake” relationships with the region’s best growers of old vine fruit, sourcing the Syrah for the 2020 Hermitage from highly regarded lieux-dits with sustainably farmed vines averaging 60 years of age. Vinified at the grower’s property before being transported to the Tardieu-Laurent cellars in the Luberon, winemaker Bastien aged the 2020 Hermitage Rouge in a mix of new and one year old barrels for 12 months, followed by 12 months longer in foudre before bottling without filtering or fining, yielding mouth watering aromas and luscious, dark fruit hinting of crushed stone with velvety, structured tannins poised to age over the next several decades.

Counted “among the most vivid, precise and exciting wines being made in the region today” by the Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth, the full-bodied 96 pt. 2020 Tardieu Laurent Hermitage was declared one of the top value Hermitage wines of the vintage by Decanter’s Matt Walls, something of an understatement but a great excuse to open a bunch of those well-aged bottles to make room in the cellar for stocking up at this incredible price. Believe me - this is stunning.

Good sense of weight, volume and depth here. The acidity is marked and nicely integrated, as is the alcohol and the oak for that matter - a harmonious, though certainly a sizeable and mighty wine. Concentrated, intense and long, with a good sense of firmness and intensity, the tannins are plentiful but all saturated in fruit. This will be good in time, but wait.
