The 2020 Viñedos en San Vicente de la Sonsierra, the village red, is quite different from the previous vintages, as it has up to 20% Garnacha—more than in the past, when it could be some 2%. They also used some 10% full clusters and uncrushed grapes for the fermentation in stainless steel and plastic bins with indigenous yeasts. The wine matured in 500-liter oak barrel for some 10 months, and the integration of oak is better than with the smaller barrels. It's more expressive, with a floral character and perfume that is very attractive, and it's balanced and fresh, clean and tasty, with a medium body and very fine tannins. There are 3,800 bottles. It was bottled in September 2021 just before the following harvest.

A very good place to start discovering the character of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. José Gil is from a local wine-growing family. In 2016, he and his wife Vicky launched their own wines, which are aged in a calado, a traditional underground cellar. This is the village wine, and his time in Burgundy shows: super-elegant, with well-handled large-format oak influence.
