A tightly wound style, this red reveals cherry, blackberry, plum and violet flavors, with accents of earth and Mediterranean scrub. Fresh and solidly built, with a flinty, mineral-infused aftertaste. Shows terrific balance and persistence on the finish. Best from 2027 through 2045. 1,350 cases made, 625 cases imported.

Just outside the town of Montalcino, Il Palazzone boasts some of the highest vineyards in the zone, its holdings rounded out by small plots around the southeastern village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate. This Brunello brings together the various parcels after ageing in medium-sized used casks. It is limpid and fragrant, with thyme, sage and mint enhancing its red fruit. Fluid and easy on the entry, this midweight, well defined beauty expands with candied watermelon and raspberry, then hints of leather bring earthy intrigue. The tannins are fine-boned, and fresh acidity carries the finish. Accessible now but has plenty more to give.
