After decades of experience in the wine industry, longtime vintner Agustin Huneeus set his sights on the lesser known Coombsville area in southeastern Napa in the late 1990's, recognizing the grape-growing potential of the region over a decade before it became an AVA and establishing Faust in 1998. Now joined by a host of celebrated winemakers including Andy Erickson and Paul Hobbs, the gently sloping Faust vineyard in Coombsville is one of the oldest in the area, boasting 128 acres of vines planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon in volcanic soils that add minerality and cooled by fog and marine breezes from nearby San Pablo Bay that preserve freshness. Formerly at Harlan and Groth before joining Huneeus in 2012, winemaker David Jelinek blended mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in the 2020 Faust, aging it 20 months in 25% new French oak barrels and crafting an intriguing and pleasurable Cab with elegant, plush fruit and bright acidity.
