The Elio Altare 2020 Barolo Unoperuno leads with floral aromas of crushed rose and lilac and then continues to rich fruit with dark currant and plum. Oak toast or baking spice appears on the nose, but it also defines the palate. It shows a softness or plushness that is rare to Nebbiolo, and the tannins are already quite silky and approachable. The blend of fruit this year is Arborina (in La Morra), Cannubi (in Barolo), Pernano (in Castiglione Falletto), Sarmassa (in Barolo) and Cerretta (in Serralunga d'Alba). This is a limited release of 1,100 bottles.

The 2020 Barolo Unoperuno is a blend of top sites, fruit from Cannubi, Arborina, Cerretta, Pernanno, Sarmassa and Bricco Ambrogio, all hand-destemmed. Silky and floral, with mid-weight structure, the 2020 is quite open in the early going. Bright, red-toned fruit, mint, spice, cedar, tobacco and incense all build effortlessly in the glass. This is beautifully done and wonderfully exotic.

Cherry, plum, fruitcake and mineral flavors are wrapped in toasty oak. Balanced, expressive and inviting, with a lush texture and substantial warmth from the ripe profile. This red lingers, with a long, fresh and spice-infused aftertaste. Best from 2027 through 2043. 50 cases made, 20 cases imported.
