There is a delightful sucrosity to the ripe cherry fruit, with rose petal notes and a supple lilt to the fresh, approachable texture. This should drink well young but have the substance to age as well. The domaine owns nearly a half-hectare of Chapelle, which is in the lieu-dit Les Gémeaux, just north of En la Chapelle. Winemaker Alexandre Abel has been working hard to ensure proper ripeness: he notes it is often among the first picked and the last pressed off.

An exuberantly fresh yet decidedly ripe nose freely offers up its aromas of red currant, black cherry, violet and pretty spice wisps. The super-sleek, intense and gorgeously textured larger-scaled flavors possess an abundance of dry extract that beautifully buffers the very firm tannic spine shaping the moderately austere and hugely long finale. This is terrific though it's a robust Chapelle unapologetically built for the long-term.

Purple colour with density through the middle. Ripe deep purple in colour. There is a bundle of fruit on the nose too, though it is not clear yet where this is heading. Somehow I don’t expect Chapelle to be so fruit forward. A redcurrant undercurrent behind. Will this be nuanced enough? Slightly dry finale. Tasted Nov 2021.

Revisited in bottle, the 2020 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru opens in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums and spices, mingled with hints of licorice and peony. Full-bodied, rich and structured, this has shut down hard in the last year, with lively acids and powdery structuring tannins in the foreground. It shows terrific potential but will demand patience.

The 2020 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a slight metallic reduction on the nose that will need a few years to blow off (I think it will). The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, gentle grip, quite tangy in the mouth with marmalade infusing the red plum and blackcurrant fruit towards the finish. I suspect this might shut down for several years before reawakening.
