The nose has the spiciness of cardamom, anise and cinnamon, but also floral aromas of peonies, roses and lilacs. On the palate, cherries and blackberries join more spices and flowers, and a powerful current of citrus and earth also emerges. Tannins are sleek and polished.

Mocha meets dried black cherries, plums and minty herbs as the 2020 Carmignano Riserva Trefiano slowly evolves in the glass. This is silky smooth and cool-toned in feel, with a sour citrus tinge elevating ripe wild berry fruits as hints of sage embellish the close. It finishes pleasantly bitter and incredibly long, leaving crystalline tannins to pierce the palate as echoes of licorice and minerals slowly taper off. This shows the warmth of the vintage, but does so with impeccable balance.

Elegant and pure, featuring cherry, raspberry, floral and mineral aromas and flavors. Solidly built, with a grip of dense, dusty tannins on the finish. Nonetheless, this stays balanced and persistent on the herb-infused aftertaste. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Canaiolo. Best from 2027 through 2040. 600 cases made, 100 cases imported.

A slightly austere and rustic Carmignano showing the typical chewy clout of tannins on the palate. There is good definition of flavors, which show minerals, plums, white pepper and citrus. Long and tight, but should soften in two more years. From organically grown grapes. Try from 2026.
