The 2020 Pergolaia, the estate's Sangiovese-based blend, is a pretty, exotic wine. Ripe red cherry fruit, white pepper, mint, rose petal and cinnamon show the racier side of Sangiovese off to great effect. Dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon round out the blend. All the elements are so nicely balanced.

On the nose, aromas of rose petals soften a strong, astringent fruitiness, while savory notes of earth and ash lead onto a palate that starts meaty and spicy, before a gentle, tempering sweetness eventually emerges to provide a sense of comfort. Intentional and satisfying.

A blend of organic and biodynamic Sangiovese (in the biggest percentage) with smaller parts Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the Caiarossa 2020 Pergolaia opens to a deep garnet color and medium rich-concentration. There are ruby highlights that come from the Sangiovese, and that grape contributes to the wine's accessible and silky personality. There is plenty of bright cherry. Among these new releases, this is the bottle to open in the near term, especially with a meat roast and potatoes.

Aromas and flavors of black currant, black olive tapenade, violet and cedar dominate this red for now, with purity and precision, while densely woven tannins add to the velvety texture. Balanced and long. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2030. 4,000 cases made, 1,500 cases imported.

Attractive red fruit character here with orange peel, cured meat and wet stones on offer. Medium- to full-bodied, firm and linear with fine tannins and juicy acidity that adds freshness and crunchy feeling to it. Bright and velvety finish. Made from biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. 76% sangiovese, 14% merlot and 10% cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold.
