A truly artisan Southern Rhone beauty crafted in the traditional style, the outstanding 95 pt. Domaine du Cayron Gigondas offers rich, energetic fruit with classic notes of peppery garrigue balancing ripe tannins, ranked “among the finest wines not just of Gigondas but of France,” according to Vinous critic Josh Raynolds and priced to deliver outstanding value.
Established over 180 years ago by the Faraud family, the historic Domaine du Cayron is located in the heart of Gigondas in the shadow of the craggy saw-toothed mountains in the Vaucluse known as the Dentelles de Montmirail, now run by fifth generation sisters Roseline, Cendrine, and Delphine. Spanning 17 hectares on 20 different parcels throughout the Gigondas AOC, the Domaine’s vineyards are located at some of the appellations’s highest altitudes from 300 to 400 meters with vines averaging 40 years, planted with mostly Grenache and smaller amounts of Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvedre on a mix of clay, marl and limestones soils. Blending all the grapes into a single cuvee and fermenting in concrete tanks, the full-bodied 2019 Domaine du Cayron Gigondas was aged for two years in large oak foudres dating back more than 50 years, boasting plush, earthy fruit with the “singular, classic and downright Provençal characters that I absolutely love” according to Jeb Dunnuck, its fresh acidity and layered complexity promising a long-lived evolution in the cellar.
Described by Vinous critic Josh Raynolds as among the appellation’s “most classically proportioned, elegant and complex” wines built “to age effortlessly,” the 95 pt. 2019 Domaine du Cayron Gigondas is a thrilling discovery for fans of traditionally crafted Southern Rhone seeking exceptional value, a little-known gem to enjoy often over the next decade that easily eclipses many pricier blends from neighboring Chateauneuf-du-Pape at a bargain price. |
