Purchasing his first vineyard in eastern Montalcino, founder Giovanni Neri established Casanova di Neri in 1971, considered a pioneer in implementing lower yields to maximize the quality of his Sangiovese grapes and producing the estate's first Brunello in 1978. After taking over the management and winemaking duties of the estate in 1991, Giovanni's son Giacomo Neri was among the first Brunello producers to move away from the traditional practice of categorizing wines as "normale or riserva," concentrating instead on a portfolio of multi-site and single vineyard cuvees sourced from the estate's 63 hectares of vineyards spread throughout the denomination. Called "one of the region's most balanced and enjoyable entry level Brunellos" by Eric Guido of Vinous, the elegant 95 pt. 2019 Casanova di Neri was aged in the estate's underground winery for 43 months in large oak casks followed by 6 months in bottle, yielding a well-balanced Brunello described by Jeb Dunnuck's Audrey Frick as "pure and energetic, with rich, ripe concentration and ripe tannins" that promises a decade of enjoyment and as a bonus is "also a great value." A rich red/garnet color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Giovanni Neri is a muscular and highly expressive, moody wine with layered and compelling aromas of cigar box, fresh tobacco leaf, dried currants, worn leather, crushed stones, and salted orange peel. Mouthwatering and structured, it has a chiseled structure with ripe tannins and mouthwatering, fresh acidity, and it’s long on the palate. It demands time in the cellar before drinking over the coming 20-30 years.

Wow, this wine steals the show. A new addition to the Casanova di Neri portfolio now in its second year, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Giovanni Neri pays tribute to Giacomo Neri's father and represents a stylistic shift to the most elegant side of Montalcino. The wine reveals a very nuanced bouquet with toasted cherry pit, Luxardo syrup and balsam herb. There is dark slate and stony mineral that dovetail into a very clean and pretty earthiness. The tannins are slightly sweeter compared to other wines from this vintage, and there are fragrant tones of heritage rose and lilac. The ratio between tannin and fruit is excellent, and I can see this wine aging long into the future. Production is 9,600 bottles.
