The 2019 Polvento is nearly impossible to pull away from, as a bouquet of cinnamon-dusted black cherries, cedar spice box and dark, dark chocolate keeps me at the edge of the glass. It’s seamlessly silky and elegant throughout, washing polished ripe red berries across the palate with ease while leaving a staining of minerals and fine-grain tannins in their wake. Hints of mocha mix with a twang of sour citrus and wild herbs, as this finishes classically structured and incredibly long. The 2019 is a glorious vintage for Polvento, a varietal Sangiovese from Umbria that can easily compete across all of central Italy.

Made with certified organic Sangiovese, the Barberani 2019 Polvento offers nice concentration and generous fruit flavors. The wine is equally restrained, thanks to its elegant lines and its well-managed aromatic intensity. Length is prized over brawn, and its fruity clarity is underlined especially well. This remains a bright expression of a grape with wild cherry aromas, crushed flower, light spice and potting soil. Polvento ages in barrique for two years.

Polished nose of toffee, hazelnuts, cherries and plums. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Flavorful, with a pretty balance of ripe fruit and sweet spice. Lengthy, firm finish. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Better after 2023.
