2019 Alcohuaz Tococo (750ml)

Syrah from Elqui Valley, Coquimbo, Chile

95WA

The 2019 Tococo is their pure Syrah marked by the white granite soils from a plot above the winery and the high altitude where the vines were planted in 2009. It fermented in stone lagares with indigenous yeasts and 100% full clusters and matured in 2,500-liter oak foudres for 22 months. It has varietal notes reminiscent of something from the Northern Rhône, smoked bacon, violets and tar, blue fruit and some iron and like the rest of 2019s, very good freshness and balance. It's juicy and characterful, with depth, complexity and vibrant minerality. This has to be the finest Tococo to date and transcends the character of the vintage. 11,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2021.

95 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Issue # 256 - Aug 2021)

The 2019 Syrah Tococo is 100% fermented with stalks and aged for 21 months in foudres. Intense violet in color. The nose features geranium and gunpowder over raspberry and a whiff of animal tempered by spice notes. Fruity and expressive in the mouth, it is intense with power and freshness along with fine, delicate tannins that lend an austere tone. A wine inspired by the Cornas region.

94 points, Joaquín Hidalgo, Vinous (May 2021)
