Established in 2012 by the team behind Far Niente and Nickel & Nickel, Bella Union was created to blend various vineyards, appellations and barrel selections into an approachable, fruit-driven Cabernet Sauvignon, its main vineyard covering 25-acres in the Rutherford AVA. Located in the heart of Rutherford, the historic vineyards along Bella Oaks Lane have long been considered prime growing sites, the Bella Oaks vineyard designation appearing on the labels of esteemed wineries throughout the years including Heitz Cellar and more recently Staglin. Taking its name from the same dirt road that once led into the Mayacamas Mountains to the Bella Union Mining Company, the vineyard is planted on well-draining, gravelly soils known for contributing Rutherford's characteristic minerality and fine tannins, while the location on the western Rutherford Bench allows for even ripening. Blending mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the outstanding 2018 Bella Union was aged in a mix of new and used French oak barrels for 18 months, a juicy, fruit-driven Cab ready to enjoy over the coming decade.
