After spending the first years of his career working alongside his brother Gianni, Roberto Voerzio established his own winery in the late 1980's, crafting richly concentrated Cru Barolo "as seamless and sexy as they come" according to Jeb Dunnuck from 14 hectares of organically farmed Cru vineyards primarily in La Morra along with a parcel in nearby Cerequio. Pioneering the technique of green harvesting in the region and implementing staggeringly small yields, Voerzio cuts off entire bunches and meticulously trims those remaining into a rounder shape, employing extensive selection in the vineyards on multiple passes during the growing season that allows him to pick the optimally ripe grapes earlier and minimizes intervention in the cellar. Hand harvesting the Nebbiolo grapes at up to half of the maximum yields allowed, Roberto and his son Davide employ spontaneous fermentations and age the Barolos in a mix of new and used French barriques and casks for 22 to 27 months before returning them to stainless tank for 8 months without filtering or fining, the wines undergoing further aging in bottle and remaining fresh, finessed and deeply textured throughout their long-lived evolution.
