Ask any sommelier or Italian wine expert who knows their stuff and you'll get a unanimous response – these exceptional, highly allocated selections from Produttori del Barbaresco are among Piedmont's best, described as "gorgeous wines that deliver a remarkable combination of quality and value" by Vinous critic Antonio Galloni. Benefiting from our long-term relationships in the region, these exciting releases of 94 pt. plus rated 2017 Produttori del Barbaresco Riservas along with the outstanding 93 pt. 2018 Barbaresco DOCG offer exceptional value at best on the market pricing, now a last chance opportunity for savvy Nebbiolo fans already familiar with this iconic producer to stock the cellar or for anyone looking to enjoy the full range of the region's top-rated Cru Barbaresco's.
Incorporating all their best fruit in 2018 into the entry level Barbaresco DOCG, Produttori's finessed and elegant 93 pt. 2018 Barbaresco was aged for 24 months in large oak casks before bottling, yielding "a luminous expression of Nebbiolo" according to the Wine Advocate's Monica Larner, that's already drinking beautifully now and ready to age over the next 15 years. Produced only in exceptional vintages, the 2017 single vineyard Riservas were all vinified and aged the same, 36 months in large oak barrels and 8 months in bottle, placing the focus on the unique qualities of each Cru. Sourced from the cooler climate and higher elevation of Muncagota, the Wine Spectator's Bruce Sanderson describes the 95 pt. 2017 Muncagota Riserva as "intense but balanced," while the 94 pt. 2017 Pora Riserva has "a beautiful, vibrant acidity giving a very nice brightness to the wine" according to the Wine Independent' Susan Hulme, Pora's fertile soils producing an open knit style with gentle tannins. From the northernmost Ovello Cru above the village of Barbaresco known for yielding muscular tannins, the 94 pt. 2017 Ovello Riserva is "a brooding powerhouse" according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, while the "powerful and resonant," 95 pt. Asili Riserva boasts "plenty of energy" according to the Wine Spectator's Bruce Sanderson, the distinctive hilltop Asili Cru yielding a powerful yet elegant, long-lived wine. Boasting high calcium soils that produce a beautiful mineral finish, the 95 pt. 2017 Montefico Riserva is "one of the clear stand outs" of the 2017 lineup according to critic Galloni, while the 96 pt. 2017 Montestefano Riserva boasts the Cru's signature deep flavors and powerfully built tannins, becoming "increasingly silky and slender with time," according to the Wine Advocate's Monica Larner. Known for its varied soils yielding rich complexity, the 96 pt. 2017 Rabaja Riserva is "firmly structured but also showing finesse" according to the Wine Enthusiast's Kerin O'Keefe, while the "impressive" 95 pt. 2017 Rio Sordo Riserva reflects "Nebbiolo at its best" according to Antonio Galloni, the southern Rio Sordo Cru producing a seductive, elegant wine with a powerfully structured core.
Setting "some of the highest standards of winemaking for any cooperative in the world," according to critic Robert Parker Jr., Produttori del Barbaresco's 2017 Riservas and 2018 Barbaresco offer unquestionable value, priced at a fraction of other producers' single Cru bottlings and promising decades of enjoyment – choose a few favorites or mix a case, but don't hesitate to secure your selection of these magnificent age-worthy Produttori del Barbaresco wines while they last. |

The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pora (with 13,333 bottles released) is usually the first wine I taste each year when I review this set of Riservas from Produttori del Barbaresco. That's because it usually appears as the most delicate, and the intensity of each successive bottle increases after this one. But these schematics are a bit more difficult to align in a hot and dry vintage such as this that produced richer and more succulent fruit across the board. The Pora is redolent of red and purple fruit with a little more blackberry and plum compared to previous editions. The tannic strength of the wine is also more elaborate. Pora works very well in 2017.
94 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is rich, creamy and layered, with a bit more generosity than is typically the case. Sweet red cherry, red plum, spice and rose petal are amplified in a radiant, open-knit Barbaresco that will start drinking well in a few years' time.
93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)
A rich, fruity version, this Barbaresco exudes ripe cherry fruit augmented by accents of tar, mint, earth and spice. Firms up nicely on the finish, yet stays fresh and energetic. Best from 2024 through 2040. 1,111 cases made, 350 cases imported.
93 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (2022)
The 2017 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Pora Riserva has light notes of fragrant meadow flowers on the nose and on the palate and some background sweet spice notes. On the palate there is a beautiful, vibrant acidity giving a very nice brightness to the wine. The concentration is a little lighter but the wine has a lively, lithe and refreshing feel culminating in fine, gravelly-textured tannins. The Pora vineyard is the one closest to the Tanaro river and it tends to get breezes and more humidity during the day plus warm early mornings. It has quite fertile soils. This tends to produce more open knit wines with gentle tannins.
93 points, Susan Hulme, Wine Independent (Jul 2022)
Balsamic aromas of camphor mingle with cedar, underbrush and dark spice. The austere palate shows dried cherry, prune soaked in spirits, licorice and clove alongside taut, close-grained tannins that leave a somewhat drying finish. Drink through 2029.
