The “les Rogelins” bottling from Clotilde Legrand is her top of the line cuvée of Saumur-Champigny, which in 2017 she chose to raise in one-third new oak. The wine spent at least two years in barrel prior to bottling and today it is still a young wine in climbing mode, despite already being eight years of age. This too was a “new release” when I last tasted it back in 2023. The wine’s bouquet is outstanding, wafting from the glass in a very precise blend of sweet dark berries, cassis, cigar wrapper, espresso, a beautiful base of flinty soil tones, woodsmoke and a very refined framing of nutty new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and complex, with a gorgeous core of fruit, buried tannins, great focus and balance and a very long, very pure and very promising finish. This will be as fine as any bottling of Clos Rougeard “les Poyeux” once it is ready to drink, and though it stems from different soils, the stylistic similarity is notable. Fine, fine juice.
