The 2017 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is dark and smoky, with wild herbs giving way to shaved cedar, plums and hints of camphor. This is soft and pliant upon entry, with salty minerals and tart woodland berries to contrast, along with hints of sour citrus that come forward toward the close. Fine tannins saturate the palate throughout the finale, leaving hints of black licorice under an air of purple-tinged florals. The 2017 works very hard to balance the dry warmth of the vintage, resulting in a respectable effort that should be cellared for a short time, and then enjoyed over the medium term.

Supple in texture, exhibiting cherry, plum, earth, tobacco and some woodsy funk that creeps in around the edges. Balanced, with well-integrated tannins and fine length. Sangiovese, Mammolo and Canaiolo. Drink now through 2033. 1,700 cases made, 600 cases imported.
