The quaint village of Gigondas is well situated below the Dentelles de Montmirail, a small mountain created when geological earth crust buckled vertically from tectonic forces. Ever since erosion has littered the appellation with limestone and marl from the Jurassic and sandstones from more recent glacial periods. This mix is rare in the Rhone, gifting Gigondas with complex terroirs and varied elevations. St. Damien's vineyards are planted on the terraced hillsides with each cuvee from different terroir; the Vieilles Vignes from lower terraces with round stones common in the Rhone, La Louisiane planted on sandy clay and red alluvials with broken stones, and Les Souteyrades grey clay with little stone. Rivers, glaciers, and eroded Dentelles limestone commingled over the last 60 million years makes for a great study in the terroir of Gigondas. The three cuvees are all composed of 20% Mourvedre (40-year old) and the balance Grenache planted in 1942, 1948 and 1964. Rave reviews for these traditional, terroir expressive wines, are among the very best of Gigondas. |
