The special cuvée is the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Larmes Papales, 100% Grenache that was brought up in concrete tanks and demi-muids. Just sensational anyway you look at it, with flamboyant notes of blackberries, roasted herbs, melted licorice, and Asian spices, this beauty is ripe, powerful, and full-bodied, with sweet tannin and a great finish. It’s for the Grenache lovers out there and will keep for 10-15 years. Despite its rich, powerful style, this beauty just glides over the palate. Bravo!

An impressive pure Grenache from la Crau (ouest), the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape les Larmes Papales aged entirely in demi-muids. Yet the delicacy of its garrigue aromas persist, entwined among silky cherries and raspberries. It's full-bodied but leaves a light impression on the palate, it's pretty fruit underscored by hints of pencil shavings on the long, elegant finish. It's a terrific effort from this largely unheralded producer.
