“The 2016 Larrivaux is fabulous. The 2016 is a wine of total harmony and class.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Bordeaux fans seeking value wines for everyday enjoyment will be wowed by the “sleeper of the vintage” 92 pt. 2016 Larrivaux Haut-Medoc, offering lush, ripe dark fruit with freshening acidity and distinctive minerality that’s a pleasure to drink now and built for aging, a perfect everyday Bordeaux incredibly bargain priced to enjoy often.

Located on a bucolic estate spanning 80 hectares of forest, meadows and vineyards about an hour drive north of Bordeaux city, Chateau Larrivaux’s energetic director Berangere Tesseron is among generations of women who have overseen the estate since the vineyards were first planted in 1861, now working with her husband Basile Tesseron, who is also the nephew of Alfred Tesseron of Château Pontet Canet. Sourced from 20 hectares of sustainably farmed vines near the western border of Saint Estephe, Larrivaux’s vineyard is divided into three plots, two composed of gravelly soils with deep reserves of clay and the third primarily limestone and clay with vines averaging over 35 years of age. Produced in an outstanding vintage of “absolutely remarkable wines” according to critic Antonio Galloni, the Merlot-dominated 2016 Chateau Larrivaux was aged in a mix of new and used oak barriques for 16 months under the direction of consulting enologist Eric Boissenot, yielding rich, spice-tinged dark fruit with smooth harmonious tannins that promise longevity.

At once ripe yet cool with minty freshness, this Haut-Médoc has plenty of moderately dry tannins and currant fruit character to carry it. Good length. Drink or hold.

92 points, James Suckling (Feb 2019)

Fresh and focused, with a delightful mix of dark plum, red currant and blackberry compote flavors, enlivened by licorice snap, bramble and tobacco notes. A flash of violet on the finish adds lift. Drink now through 2029. 4,167 cases made.

91 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2019)

Bold black fruits dominate this generous wine. Its dry, firm tannins are content to play a secondary role in a wine that is packed with dark fruits and general richness. Drink this wine from 2023.

The 2016 Larrivaux is fabulous. Pliant and expressive, with lovely aromatic top notes, the 2016 has a lot to offer. Red cherry fruit, flowers and mint all inform this understated yet very pretty Haut-Médoc. The 2016 is a wine of total harmony and class.

90 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2019)
