Herbs, olives, currants, fine spices and touches of bergamot and tobacco on the nose. On the palate it’s juicy and fine-veined, with a medium body, very fine tannins and a super-long, filigreed finish. 81% cabernet sauvignon and 19% merlot. Such balance. Great now, but this will benefit from further aging. For those who love classic left-bank finesse and precision, this is the vintage to buy. Drink or hold.

This nearly 200-acre estate lies in the south of the Margaux appellation. The wine is another great success in a series of superb years. It is rich but the structure and finely textured fruit give it style and longevity. Drink the wine from 2026.

A bottle of 2016 Giscours was dispatched from the château after a bottle misfired at the Southwold tasting. This example correlates to initial showings. Vivid blackberry and blueberry fruit soar on the nose after an hour's decanting, beautifully defined with a patina of new oak discreetly interwoven. The palate oozes panache, very well defined with lace-like tannins, gentle grip and just a touch of graininess towards the finish such that it does not come across "over-polished." Afford it another couple of years in bottle if you can.

Intense and concentrated, with high levels of Cabernet Sauvignon after frost impacted the Merlot and you feel it, in this deeply textured dark berry fruits, with slate and mint leaf accents, stately Left Bank, a little closed still, but with so much balance and hidden power, tannic structure inching open to show ripe cassis, black cherry and grilled spice. Not ready yet, but already confident in what it is going to become. Axel Marchal and Valerie Lavigne consultants, taking over from Denis Dubourdieu. 50% new oak for ageing, harvest September 26 through to October 20.
