“A silky, supple Margaux”

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Sourced from an outstanding vintage exhibiting “wonderful balance, intensity and clarity” according to critic James Suckling, the lush 93 pt. 2016 Deyrem Valentin offers aromatic, dark ripe fruit hinting of spice and graphite with a lingering, velvety finish, an enticing Left Bank blend built for years of aging that delivers Margaux’s signature elegance at a bargain price.

Surrounded by vineyards owned by five of the Margaux classed growths, Chateau Deyrem Valentin is located in the Soussans region in northern Margaux, owned by the Sorge family since 1928 and now under the direction of fourth-generation Christelle Sorge. Considered the best part of the commune of Soussans, the estate’s 13 hectares of organically farmed vineyards are situated in Marsac just north of Lascombes, Labegorce, and Margaux, planted almost evenly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with small amounts of Petit Verdot in well drained pebble and gravel soils over sand and clay, the vines averaging around 30 years with the oldest nearly 100 years of age. Employing strict selection in the vineyard as well as the cellar, winemaker Christelle Sorge fermented the parcels for the 2016 Deyrem Valentin in cement and aged it in about 30% new French oak barrels for 15 months before bottling, preserving Margaux’s signature enticing aromatics and yielding a deeply structured blend that’s “full of potential” according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss, promising to evolve over the next decade or more.

An overachieving gem hidden among its higher profile neighbors, Vinous critic Neal Martin describes the luscious 93 pt. 2016 Deyrem Valentin as “simply a beautiful wine whose silky texture will seduce from 100 yards," an elegant Margaux over delivering value and conveyed in pristine provenance for Bordeaux lovers to enjoy without hesitation.

Owned by the Sorge family and run by Christelle Sorge, this small estate is in Soussans, just to the north of Margaux. The rich, smoky character of the wine is full of potential. Fine tannins mingle with the black-currant fruit and dusty texture to give a wine that should be ready from 2024.

93 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2019)

Very attractive ripe cassis and dark-stone aromas with coal smoke, violets and a wealth of dark berries. The palate has a very plush, concentrated and polished feel and delivers a beautifully juicy finish. Try from 2022.

93 points, James Suckling (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Deyrem Valentin is soft, plush and inviting. Dark cherry, chocolate, new leather, licorice and spice are pushed forward in a silky, supple Margaux that offers tremendous near and medium term appeal. Floral notes add brightness on the finish as the 2016 acquires a bit more finesse with time in the glass.
