“Some of the richest, deepest and most texturally beautiful wines”

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

While fans of Roberto Voerzio’s Cru wines need no introduction to the Barolo cult favorite, this offering for the 2020 Roberto Voerzio Barolo releases is a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire some of the Piedmont’s most sought after and age worthy Nebbiolo wines ranking Voerzio “at the pinnacle of achievement among the world’s most gifted winemakers” according to Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, all rated 98 pts. and above and delivered in perfect provenance to savor over the next decades.

After spending the first years of his career working alongside his brother Gianni, Roberto Voerzio established his own winery in the late 1980’s, crafting richly concentrated Cru Barolo “as seamless and sexy as they come” according to Jeb Dunnuck from 14 hectares of organically farmed Cru vineyards primarily in La Morra along with a parcel in nearby Cerequio. Pioneering the technique of green harvesting in the region and implementing staggeringly small yields, Voerzio cuts off entire bunches and meticulously trims those remaining into a rounder shape, employing extensive selection in the vineyards on multiple passes during the growing season that allows him to pick the optimally ripe grapes earlier and minimizes intervention in the cellar. Hand harvesting the Nebbiolo grapes at up to half of the maximum yields allowed, Roberto and his son Davide employ spontaneous fermentations and age the Barolos in a mix of new and used French barriques and casks for 22 to 27 months before returning them to stainless tank for 8 months without filtering or fining, the wines undergoing further aging in bottle and remaining fresh, finessed and deeply textured throughout their long-lived evolution.

Revealing the Cru’s signature delicate floral aromatics, the 98 pt. 2020 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate offers layered dark fruit with elegant, refined tannins, while the 98 pt. 2020 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio reveals silky, softly textured fruit with distinct minerality, described as “one of the truly iconic wines of Barolo” by Antonio Galloni. Elegantly styled and hinting of wild berry, the 99 pt. 2020 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Fossati shows lightly spiced fruit with dusty minerality and the 99 pt. 2020 Roberto Voerzio Barolo La Serra boasts layers of dark fruit balanced by firm tannins, each rewarding a few years of patient cellaring with over two decades of longevity.

Reminding Barolo fans “of the dazzling heights achieved by the Nebbiolo grape” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner as “one of La Morra's most gifted artisans,” collectors of age worthy Cru Barolo won’t need convincing to scoop up these sumptuous 2020 Roberto Voerzio selections, showcasing Voerzio’s talent for transparently expressing each Cru’s unique qualities and offering the layered complexity and finesse that Nebbiolo lovers know promises many years of enjoyment to come.

Superb complexity on the nose with crushed berries, dried flowers, tar, licorice and aniseed. Full body, firm tannins and superb depth and intesity. Goes on for minutes and changes all the time. Drink from 2023.

Gorgeous notes of black cherries, tobacco, and licorice emerge from the 2015 Barolo Cerequio, and this beauty is about as seamless and sexy as they come. More spice, toasted almonds, and dried flower notes develop with time in the glass, and it has magical tannins, medium-bodied richness, and a great, great finish. Give bottles 2-4 years and it’s going to impress for a good 2-3 decades.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2020)

The 2015 Barolo Cerequio shows impressive and firm construction; however, the wine remains delicate and finessed all the while. This is a real stunner with inner fiber that is as strong, but as softly textured, as the highest quality silk. Aromas of wild cherry, violets, licorice and tar are in a tight, nascent state at this young stage. This implies they will blossom with time, coming into focus with greater intensity and complexity as the wine continues its careful bottle aging. This wine shows an evident mineral signature at the back.

96 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Issue # 243 - Jun 2019)
