Long recognized as one of the top crus in Chianti, the soils are typical galestro, pieces of slate mixed into clay and sand with vineyards facing southeast at altitudes reaching 470 meters. While it’s often said the name Conca d’Oro derives from the fact that this is prime locale for growing Sangiovese, the name actually comes from its history of producing grain for one of Tuscany’s staples, bread, till the mid-19th century. But while perhaps the “golden basin” originally referred to glimmering fields of ripened wheat, it’s certain that the wines of Le Cinciole will have you agreeing with internationally recognized critic Antonio Galloni – there is indeed “gold in them thar hills.” |
