McLaren Vale's iconic Hickinbotham vineyard has been an Australian institution since its first planting by Alan Hickinbotham in 1971. While the Hickinbotham family never bottled their own wines, their fruit was always an integral part of some McLaren Vale's most definitive wines. When California's Jackson Family Wines purchased the property in 2012, it marked a momentous turning point for this legendary property, as it was set to become a full estate winery.
With famed, 100-point winemaker Chris Carpenter at the helm (the inimitable talent behind Napa's Lokoya, Cardinale, and Mr. Brave wines), the property became an immediate force in the Australian wine scene, known primarily for its spectacular Cabernet-Shiraz blend, The Peake. You might have recently caught Erin Larkin's multi-vintage retrospective for Wine Advocate, in which the 2015 The Peake notched a whopping 97 points, displaying exactly why these two varietals work so well together, especially in McLaren Vale.
