Described as "superb" by the Wine Spectator's James Molesworth, 2015 is an exceptional vintage for the red wines of Pessac-Leognan yielding powerful, concentrated blends that prompted the Wine Advocate to declare, "this appellation nailed it." Representing one of AOC's top values, the outstanding 96pt 2015 Malartic-Lagravière Rouge is a luscious, long-lived Left Bank blend that will "age with panache" according to critic Neal Martin, value priced at a fraction of Pessac's prestige cuvees and conveyed in perfect condition ex-Chateau 2022.
With a history dating back to the 18th century, the modern transformation of Malartic-Lagravière began when the Bonnie family purchased the Chateau in 1996 and set about modernizing the winemaking, replanting vines while employing sustainable viticulture and expanding the vineyard holdings to over 50 hectares. Located just south of the town of Leognan, Malartic's patchwork of vineyards for the Rouge are planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot averaging over 30 years of age on the appellation's famed gravel plateau, a well-draining, eight-meter-deep terrace layered over fossil-rich limestone with veins of clay. Reducing yields while ensuring optimal ripening under the direction of famed consultant Michel Rolland, the grapes were fermented in a mix of stainless steel and upright oak vats then aged 18 months in mostly new French oak barrels. A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot with small amounts of Petit-Verdot and Cabernet-Franc, the 2015 Malartic-Lagraviere boasts richly concentrated dark fruit with a nuance of graphite on a backbone of supple tannins and impressive depth, described as "one of the best Malartics I have tasted" according to critic Jane Anson.
Considered one of the greatest releases in the estate's long history, the highly rated 2015 is indeed "a wonderful Malartic Lagravière that will age with panache" says critic Neal Martin, conveyed in pristine provenance direct from the Chateau and value priced to enjoy over the next decade. Calling it "positively thrilling," Vinous critic Antonio Galloni offers simple, yet sound advice, "The 2015 Malartic Lagravière is a total rock star. Don't miss it!" Now offered at a price that makes it an easy call. |
