Savvy Bordeaux lovers searching for bargains know that well crafted Cru Bourgeois wines from the Haut-Medoc can deliver serious enjoyment and outstanding value, especially in the best years. From a vintage that "delivers exceptional quality across the region" according to the Wine Spectator's James Molesworth, the 91 pt. 2015 Chateau Fourcas-Dupre offers fresh aromatics and ripe fruit tinged with tantalizing notes of graphite, finishing with elegant, integrated tannins, now specially priced under $20.
Located in the northern part of the Gironde peninsula in the Listrac-Medoc AOC, the centuries' old Chateau Fourcas-Dupre began its modern renaissance in 1970 with its purchase by the Pages family, whose upgrades in viticulture and winemaking led to a consistent rise in quality over the next five decades. Spread over a contiguous 46-hectare parcel, the vines for the Grand Vin Rouge average over 30 years of age, planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in gravel, clay and limestone soils at an altitude of 42 meters, the highest elevation in the Medoc. Blending nearly equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with Cab Franc and a little Petit Verdot under the direction of esteemed consultant Eric Boissenot, winemaker Gilles Bergerot aged the "superb" 2015 Fourcas-Dupre in 33% new French oak for around 12 months, yielding juicy fresh fruit with remarkable balance and a "certain elegance" according to the Wine Advocate's Neal Martin, punching "well above" expectations and crafted to evolve over another decade or more.
A top value Left Bank Blend that has been cellared an additional five plus years in pristine conditions, the richly layered 2015 Fourcas-Dupre is elegantly crafted from an outstanding vintage, its evolving mineral-driven complexity poised to deliver enjoyment now and for years to come and bargain priced to do both. |
