Back with the 2011, we introduced you to what promised to become the leading example in the newly formalized category within Chianti Classico. After decades of confusion, lackluster performances and downright fraud on the part of far too many producers in the zone, the "Gran Selezione" classification was born. The Chianti Consorzio – governing body of the zone – laid the groundwork for an all-new class of Chianti, one which would forever elevate the zone, its wines and consumer confidence in the most important region of Tuscan wines. Monna Lisa is the Gran Selezione of Vignamaggio.
Vignamaggio is one of Tuscany's oldest estates: a working farm since 1404, Vignamaggio has been cultivating grapes and making wine for over 600 years and it is today one of the leading wineries in the Greve-in-Chianti subzone.
In 2010, a new winemaking cellar was built directly opposite the villa and capacity expanded. Through the acquisition of small parcels, the estate expanded into the Gaiole area of Chianti Classico. More recently, a new owner, French architect Patrice Taravella, purchased the estate in 2014. The wines and the grounds are going through a renaissance. The Monna Lisa's final selection was done by Taravella, yielding the finest Monna Lisa to date; a wine with great structure, intensity and balance with no ambiguity. A superb, classically styled Chianti Selezione from the exceptional 2013 vintage at a Classico price. |
