Chateau Puech-Haut stands majestic, center stage at the end of a long, winding, olive tree bordered drive. The majesty of this place, including an estate which now covers more than 100 acres of the most impeccable vineyards in the Coteaux du Languedoc, would have you believe that Puech-Haut had been here for generations. In fact, this is the work of one man, Gérard Bru, whose vision transformed bare earth and a crumbling bourgeois residence into what many consider the greatest estate outside the Rhone Valley for striking, Rhone-inspired wines. Working with the maestro himself, Philippe Cambie, Gérard Bru and his team have been producing head turning cuvees for decades. One of the most impressive of these recent cuvees, la Closerie du Pic, is sourced from the Languedoc's most important sub-AOP, Pic Saint-Loup. Named for the stunning, 2,200ft. mountain at its center, Pic Saint-Loup is surrounded by limestone ridges, overlooking the garrigue-covered landscape below. Syrah performs beautifully in these high, cool, steep ridges, wines based upon their fruit emulating the great wines of Northern Rhone. For 2013, that's precisely what Puech-Haut brings us in their la Closerie du Pic. You'll think Cote Rotie, then you'll be shocked by the price. |
