Known as the only Chateau to ever succeed in changing its 1855 Classification to become First Growth in 1973, Chateau Mouton-Rothschild’s meticulously tended gardens, gleaming new cellars and the stunning Chateau itself are all built to impress, but none outshine the estate's stunning Grand Vins themselves, crafted under the direction of the legendary "Winemaker of the Decade" Philippe Dhalluin who managed Mouton-Rothschild until 2020. Arriving from Brainaire-Ducru in 2003, Dhalluin initiated improvements that have paid quality dividends for years, limiting yields and employing strict selection with only 50% of the harvest making the final cut for the Grand Vin. Located on the Grand Plateau of Mouton neighboring Lafite, Chateau Mouton Rothschild's 83-hectare vineyard for the Grand Vin is planted to 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and the remainder Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot in mostly a contiguous parcel. Averaging 50 years of age with some over 130 years, the Cabernet Sauvignon vines are planted in unique soils composed of an astounding 98% gravel with the remaining 2% clay on small hills rising up to 29 meters, the highest points in Pauillac. Hand harvested at optimal ripeness by the same dedicated workers year over year, Philippe Dhalluin vinified the grapes from the older and younger vines in each parcel separately, always aging the Grand Vin in 100% new French oak between 19 and 22 months, yielding long-lived wines of incredible depth and concentration with a luscious fruit profile and caressing silky tannins.
Coming from some of the top Bordeaux vintages of the last two decades, the 99pt 2009 Chateau Mouton Rothschild is a "stunning wine" that's simply "magnificent" according to the Wine Advocate's Neal Martin, while the Wine Spectator's James Molesworth calls the 100pt 2010 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild "a battleship of a wine" summing it up as "awesome." Detailing Mouton's signature nuances of "graphite, lead pencil shavings, floral, and Asian spice aromas and flavors," critic Jeb Dunnuck crowned the 99pt 2015 Mouton-Rothschild "one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage" while Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson called the 100pt 2016 Mouton-Rothschild "monumental," ranked by James Suckling as "one of the most powerful Mouton’s ever" that the Wine Advocate declared, in a word, "magic."
Representing the pinnacle of Bordeaux and among the world's greatest wines, these perfectly cellared selections from Chateau Mouton-Rothschild are available on a limited basis, some ready to enjoy and all poised to reward Bordeaux lovers for decades to come. All outstanding choices, don't hesitate to secure yours – in the blink of an eye, they'll be gone. |

Clearly a perfect wine that shows incredible depth of fruit with currants, dark chocolate, minerals and licorice. Full-bodied, tight and wound up with ripe tannins that let go and seduce you. Makes me want to drink it now. But this is a wine for the long term. Extraordinary. 94% cabernet sauvignon. Better in 2020.
100 points, James Suckling (Nov 2015)
This remains the stunner, a battleship of a wine, brimming with cassis, blackberry and fig fruit that has melded together now, with the backdrop of alder, bay leaf and menthol starting to emerge a bit more. The long finish is loaded with grip, pulling the fruit and other components together. And then there's that flash of iron at the very end. Awesome wine.—Non-blind Mouton-Rothschild vertical (March 2017). Best from 2025 through 2060.
99 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (2017)
Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Mouton Rothschild is a little closed to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal notes of baked black cherries, crème de cassis, blackberry compote and bouquet garni with suggestions of sweaty leather, pencil lead, cedar chest and black truffles plus a hint of crushed rocks. Full-bodied, the palate is solidly constructed of super firm, ripe, grainy tannins and lively acidity, framing the densely packed black fruit, finishing on a persistent mineral note.
98 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2020)
The 2010 Mouton-Rothschild is very deep in colour. It has an intense bouquet with blackberry, wild hedgerow, sous-bois and touches of peppermint. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. There is incredible focus to this First Growth with fabulous mineralité and tension on the finish. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the BI Wines & Spirits 10-Year On tasting.
98 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Apr 2020)
A dense, smooth and opulent wine bursting with ripe Cabernet Sauvignon flavors. It's regal and well structured, balancing the natural exuberance of Mouton with a more severe side. This is a wine with power, yet not without its charms from the fruitiness and final acidity. This great wine will age many, many years.
98 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2013)
