When it comes to the great names of Sauternes, Yquem stands alone. So large is its shadow, that it's hard to name another unless you're a true Bordeaux insider and Sauternes fanatic. For those who are, one name easily comes to mind – Lafaurie-Peyraguey. Situated directly adjacent to the iconic Yquem, this estate is prime Sauternes terroir located on the appellation's famed third terrace. Unlike Yquen, however, the wines of Lafaurie-Peyraguey can be had for one-tenth the price of its illustrious neighbor, while still giving plenty of long-term cellar upside. Today's vertical showcases a range of exceptional vintages displaying the pedigree of this Sauternes sleeper star in a bright, shining light.
All are worth your attention, but the highlights are undoubtedly the 95-point 2012, the 96-point "super-sweet, concentrated, and decadent" 2009, and the double 95-point 2010. Each one is now entering its prime but will have many years of serious evolution still ahead. Of course, there's no need to wait on the double 94-point 2007, "a top Lafaurie-Peyraguey that was worth the perseverance during the harvest." No matter which rendition you choose, you'll be getting your hands on a bona fide Sauternes gem that will have any fan of the world's great sweet wines grinning from ear to ear. |

The 2009 Lafaurie-Peyraguey is medium gold in color. It comes barreling out of the glass with powerful notes of crème brulée, quince paste, apricot preserves, and fresh ginger, followed by touches of saffron, lemon butter, and Marcona almonds. The palate is super-sweet, concentrated, and decadent, with plenty of refreshing acidity to counterbalance and an epically long, honey-nut finish.

The pale to medium gold colored 2009 Lafaurie-Peyraguey features candied citrus and dried tropical fruits with crème brûlée and chamomile notes with a waft of honey. The palate is fresh, youthful and zippy, finishing with loads of tropical layers.
