B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More A total knock-out of a Bordeaux that seduces from the first taste, the rich and deeply textured 92 pt. 2019 Chateau Beaumont offers layers of fragrant and fresh dark spiced fruit showing impressive concentration with a lingering silky finish, an elegant and classy Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend described by Neal Martin of Vinous as "a bloody great Beaumont" incredibly value priced under $20 for stocking up by the case. Located on the Left Bank of the Gironde between Margaux and Saint-Julien, the stately Chateau Beaumont is one of the Haut-Medoc's largest estates spanning 150 hectares, rising to the top of the appellation under the same ownership as Chateau Beychevelle in Saint-Julien and "now showing its fine potential" according to the Wine Enthusiast's Roger Voss. Situated in a massive single block on top of a deep gravel hill, the sustainably farmed 114-hectare vineyard is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with a small amount of Petit Verdot in a mix of sand and gravel, the nearby Gironde estuary moderating temperatures and protecting the vines from extreme highs or lows. Produced under the direction of famed consulting enologist Eric Boissenot, the richly textured 2019 Chateau Beaumont was aged in 30% new French oak for 12 months, yielding a fresh and mineral-driven Bordeaux blend with a precise and complex finish that's ready to enjoy now and built to reveal its depth over the coming decade. From an outstanding 2019 vintage described by Jeb Dunnuck as "a terrific year that will be prized by lovers of classic, impeccably made Bordeaux," the juicy and expressive 92 pt. 2019 Chateau Beaumont offers the luscious, fresh fruit and deeply layered complexity that will have Bordeaux fans reaching for another glass, a go-to selection on exclusive restaurant wine lists at four to five times the price that promises savvy Bordeaux fans and collectors who act quickly to secure their stash many years of pleasurable drinking ahead.

Read More WOW, what a pleasure! Tasted in February at Vinexpo Paris against Bordeaux from 2009 and 2010, which were two to three times the price, I was blown away by the shockingly good 2010 Chateau Citran, From the outstanding Bordeaux vintage declared "truly superb" by James Suckling, the 2010 Chateau Citran is an opulent, expressive and pristinely cellared Left Bank blend coming direct from the Chateau cellar, an exciting opportunity to enjoy the complexity of a well-aged Bordeaux now and over the next few years for an incredibly budget-friendly price. Located just west of Margaux in the Haut-Medoc and classified as Cru Bourgeois, the fairytale-like 13th century Chateau Citran was owned by the same family for over 600 years until the early 1800's, falling into disrepair over the next century and a half until considerable investments beginning in the 1940's fueled its renaissance. Under the ownership of renowned Bordeaux merchants, the Merlaut family since 1996, the 2010 Chateau Citran was sourced from the estate's 94 hectares of sustainably farmed vineyards, planted mostly to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a small amount of Cabernet Franc in sandy gravel soils and divided into two major parcels, one surrounding the historic chateau and the other near the village. A blend of 55% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cab Franc, the hand-harvested fruit for the 2010 Chateau Citran was sorted in the vineyard and fermented in a combination of stainless steel and cement tanks and oak barrels under the direction of famed consultant of Eric Boissenot, then aged in 38% new French oak barriques for 15 months with the additional 10 years of bottle aging yielding a nuanced, aromatic Bordeaux with layered dark fruit and mellowed, ultra-fine tannins. While the quality of many older Bordeaux vintages can be questionable due to less than optimal storage conditions, this ex-Chateau offer of the intriguing 2010 Chateau Citran guarantees perfect provenance, a not to be missed opportunity to enjoy an expertly cellared, well-aged Bordeaux that's drinking beautifully at a simply incredible price - certain to sell out quickly, don't hesitate to secure your stash.

Read More "Extremely sleek, elegant and well made." Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux (93 pt. Decanter review) From a top Haut-Medoc chateau classified as Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, the impressive 93 pt. 2019 Belle-Vue offers rich aromatic spiced fruit with velvety ripe tannins, a beautifully balanced and age worthy Left Bank blend promising "to be a gem of a wine" according to Jeb Dunnuck and bargain priced for everyday enjoyment. Located along the D2 just west of Macau, Chateau Belle-Vue is visible from the roadside just south of the massive iron gates of Margaux's Chateau Giscours and barely two kilometers from the Gironde. Releasing its first vintage in 1996, Chateau Belle-Vue is a relatively young estate situated near one of Bordeaux's original drainage canals that separates it from Giscours, sharing a similar name but not to be confused with St. Emilion's Chateau Bellevue. Planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon, the 15-hectare vineyard has deep rough gravelly soil considered the region's best terroir near the Garonne tributary and bordered by woodland to the east, the vines averaging around 39 years of age with some planted nearly a century ago. Boasting an unusually high percentage of Petit Verdot that adds a distinctly aromatically spiced component to the Grand Vin, the deeply structured 2019 Belle-Vue was aged for 14 months in 30% new French oak to reveal fresh, earthy fruit balanced by savory acidity, yielding "a gorgeous bottle of wine that will keep for over a decade" according to Jeb Dunnuck. Describing it as "powerful and burly," Antonio Galloni of Vinous calls the 93 pt. 2019 Belle-Vue "an ideal wine for the dinner table" its appealing spiced flavors and fresh dense tannins promising a decade of drinking pleasure at a superb value.

Read More "This is an extraordinary vintage that will go down in record books as one of the all-time greats." - Jeb Dunnuck When Bordeaux's 2022 vintage premiered three years ago, there was some uncertainty as to how the wines would play out from such a hot, dry growing season, one which surely promised wines of massive power, ripeness, and weight. Would it be too much of a good thing? As it appeared then, and as it has turned out now that the wines are releasing to market, it's an extraordinary campaign among the best of the century. As Dunnuck observes, "Now that the wines are in bottles, it’s clear they have fully lived up to the early hype—and not just at the high end. The 2022s are deep, layered, and concentrated while staying beautifully balanced, light on their feet, and elegant." Today's selection presents an incredible treasure trove that showcases the vintage's greatest features at every price in the spectrum, leaving no doubt as to how good 2022 Bordeaux really is.
