Warre Otima 10yr Tawny Port (500ml)
From Portugal

93WA 91WS 91W&S

The non-vintage Otima 10-Year Old Tawny Port reveals a medium ruby/amber/garnet color, loads of kirsch and cedar intermixed with a touch of brown sugar in the nose, rich, full-bodied flavors, a burgeoning complexity and big aromatics. This is a full-bodied, silky smooth Tawny Port that should age easily for 8-10+ years.

93 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Issue # 211 - Feb 2014)

Well-honed, with a touch of sweetness to the plush flavors of butterscotch, pear tart, almond and vanilla. Orange peel and dried ginger accents emerge on the seductively spicy finish. Drink now. 8,500 cases imported.

91 points, Wine Spectator (Sep 2015)

Light amber-tawny in color, this wine is delicately balanced between freshness and age. There’s brisk, tart peach flavor along with more mature tones of pale berries and woodsy mushrooms. Hints of tobacco smoke add to the wine’s elegance.

Ramos Pinto Porto 20 Year Tawny Quinta Do Bom Retiro (750ml)
Tinta Francisca from Douro, Portugal

98RAS 98D

Having tasted everything in the range at Ramos Pintos, the 20yr tawny is the star among tawny. Further, I would venture to say this twenty year tawny is the finest from any major port house; elegant, refined, and sublime. Coming from very, very old vines, this truly outclasses. Pure.

98 points, Bob Sprentall, B-21 Proprietor (Apr 2015)

From a single estate where a quarter of the vines are more than 80 years old: soft and seamless, boasting waves of dates, dried figs, brazil nuts and toasted almonds. Suave silky texture and wonderful savoury- sweet length. Supremely good.

94 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Feb 2021)

This Port is a triumph. Its age and its concentration are on one side of an equation that brings out the elegance of the style of this producer and the balance of sweetness, dark-toffee flavors and acidity are on the other. The wine is very ready to drink.

94 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2020)

The NV RP 30 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in February 2020 with a bar-top cork and 139 grams of residual sugar. Showing more complexity and notably more sweetness than the 20 Year also reviewed this issue, this is along the lines of the last release (the 2018) that I saw a while back. As it opens and the sugar blows off, especially a couple of days later, this shows off its complexity even more, but also just a touch of harshness. The key difference is really the complexity versus the freshness—in other words, about what you'd expect. The 20 Year has almost as much concentration and power as this elegant 30 Year, but the 20 Year is fresher and even more elegant (not that the 30 isn't rather fresh for its age), while the 30 Year is far more nuanced. I personally slightly preferred this, as I usually lean toward complexity, but reasonable minds might differ. As noted with the 20 Year, the end-date drinking window is just a placeholder. Barring a cork failure, this should hold well indefinitely—although it does not need aging.

Cockburn's Special Reserve (750ml)
From Douro, Portugal

88WA

The NV Special Reserve Port was bottled in 2015 with 110 grams per liter of residual sugar after five years in well used oak vats. This lovely Special Reserve starts with a delicious rush of fruit. Lush and fruity with velvety texture, it has some bite and power, too, but the tannins fall off rather quickly. It's all about the sweet and friendly fruit. Aeration proves that it is not quite as rich and deep as it first appeared, but it is always chock full of flavor. I tried it again the next day. It remained a very appealing Reserve with fine fruit and flavor, plus enough structural support to be interesting. In the context of its category, it does everything very well in its sexy fashion and it is often on the street for under $15. It's a nice value for a lighter-styled, casual Port. It can certainly hold, barring cork failures, but it is designed to be approachable young, not aged. Note that I normally don't review NV releases without unique identifiers, but this NV bottling for Premium Port Wines, the USA importer, has a sticker referencing the 200th anniversary: 1815-2015.

1
Croft Reserve Ruby Port (750ml)
From Douro, Portugal

88WA 88WS

The NV Reserve Ruby Porto is a blend of typical Douro grapes and wines of different ages, aged for three to four years in neutral wood. It comes in at 97 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is a lovely Ruby Reserve, showing excellent concentration for the level, focus, fine flavor and a hint of eucalyptus on the nose. With a lingering sweet edge on opening, it eventually becomes drier and tighter with aeration—not that it really needs any. This is nuanced, not about obvious sweet fruit. It is tightly wound in its youth. It even becomes a little steely, with a bit of a stonewashed feel. The finish is still laced with flavor at that point, some strawberries mingled with rhubarb. You can hold this if you must, but it's not intended to be held and it will not develop much. I won't guarantee it will be this good five years hence, in other words. I will say that it still drank great the next day, with flavors of roasted herbs and red fruits. Indeed, a few days later, it was still rather fine. Ultimately, I liked the structure and serious demeanor just a bit better than the fruit, but this is an impressive Ruby Reserve if you like them on the drier, sterner side. It over-delivers in its youth (bottled a couple of months earlier) at a nice price. Note: I do not generally review non-vintage wines absent some unique identifier. This was bottled on December 23, 2016 with a bar top cork, although the date is not noted on the label. However, the winery code on the guarantee strip "ZM 223467 05" does identify it as the bottling to which this review applies.

2019 Ramos Pinto Duas Quintas Tinto (750ml)
Touriga Nacional from Douro, Portugal

89WS 87WA

Ripe and sleek, showing boysenberry and plum puree notes that glide through easily, with light anise and violet as well as a lightly toasted finish. Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. Drink now through 2024. 4,000 cases made, 200 cases imported.

89 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Duas Quintas Tinto is mostly a 50/30 blend of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, with the rest composed of other typical grapes. It was aged for 12 months in a 50/50 mixture of stainless steel and wood (20% of the oaked half in barrel, 30% in large oak vats) and comes in at 14.3% alcohol. As is customary, this is a fruit-forward wine that adds a little distinction. This year it has very good concentration and a fresh feel, but this is a year that leans a little more to jammy fruit than freshness. Still, it never goes too far overboard in any direction. In its youth, it's going to be a crowd-pleaser for casual drinking, a little shy of structure, but tasting great. It's made to drink now, but it will hold a few years. When the fruit calms down a bit, I do wonder what will be left or if it will be nearly as much fun. I suspect not. In the meanwhile, it will do great on its own.
