2021 Pecchenino Vigna Botti Langhe Nebbiolo (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Langhe, Piedmont, Italy

90WA 90WS #73 Top 100 90JS

The Pecchenino 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo Botti has a very sprightly and pretty bouquet with cherry blossom, wild rose and lavender sachet. Those easy floral aromas cede to pencil shaving, dried ginger, baking spice and licorice. This is a lean-bodied and informal Piedmont red that packs a strong aromatic punch.

90 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Aug 2022)

Striking a balance between ripe cherry, strawberry and floral flavors and a supple texture, this red is supported by a firm structure, lingering with earth and eucalyptus accents. Drink now through 2026. 6,000 cases made, 2,100 cases imported.

Reflecting the rich legacy of legendary producer Marchesi Antinori, these Prunotto offerings range from an appealing entry level Dolcetto to high scoring Barolos, a comprehensive selection of quality Piedmont reds sourced from outstanding vineyards and value priced for mixing a case.

Situated on a verdant hillside overlooking the iconic amphitheater shaped Bussia Cru, Prunotto is located on the southeast side of the Tanaro River between Barbaresco and Barolo, its extensive estate vineyards spanning the territories of the Langhe and Monferrato. Named for Alfredo Prunotto who purchased the one-time cooperative winery in 1923, Prunotto has steadily grown in size since 1994 under the ownership of Marchesi Antinori, the Italian winemaking dynasty best known for their Tuscan wines including Solaia and Tignanello, its most recent purchase in the Cerretta Cru increasing Prunotto's estate-owned vineyards and parcels under long-term lease to over 78 hectares including 13 hectares in Barolo and 5 hectares in Barbaresco. Crafted from Piedmont’s native Dolcetto grape known for producing “juicy, quaffable, early-drinking wines” according to James Suckling, the appealing 2021 Prunotto Dolcetto d'Alba was aged in stainless steel vats to preserve its fragrant and abundant fresh ripe fruit, while the entry level 2020 Prunotto Occhetti Langhe Nebbiolo was aged in oak barrels for around 16 months yielding bright cherry fruit with smooth tannins, both revealing well-balanced acidity that makes them a pleasure to enjoy with food. Sourced from an “exemplary 2019 vintage” according to the Wine Spectator’s Bruce Sanderson, the elegant 93 pt. 2019 Prunotto Barbaresco offers bright cherry and berry fruit with a vibrant, smooth finish, while the single vineyard 95 pt. 2019 Prunotto Barbaresco Bric Turot “is the deepest and most potent” of Prunotto’s Barberescos according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, its darker cherry fruit hinting of graphite and smoky spice and both built to evolve over the next decade and beyond. Aged in a mix of large oak casks for 18 months, the elegantly understated 92 pt. 2017 Prunotto Barolo is a “charming, gracious Barolo” according to Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, while the smooth and silky 92 pt. 2018 Prunotto Barolo is “very elegant and fresh” according to Decanter’s Ines Salpico, both offering bright red fruit with taut, refined tannins and exhibiting Barolo’s excellent potential for aging.

From one of Italy’s most legendary wine dynasties, this selection of meticulously crafted Prunotto reds offers a range of outstanding choices for Piedmont wine lovers seeking value and anyone looking to explore the red wines of the region, all delicious and satisfying choices unbeatably priced to enjoy often.

This red combines cherry, plum, tar, iron, licorice and eucalyptus aromas and flavors, backed by a firm, refreshing profile. Dense and tight for now; however, the long, resonant finish and lingering fruit and white pepper accents show its potential. Best from 2027 through 2045.

93 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Dec 2023)

This is extremely floral and bright on the nose with lavender, violets and dark berries. Orange peel too. Full-bodied and solid with firm tannins and a tight finish. Better in 2024.

93 points, James Suckling (Oct 2022)

The 2019 Barbaresco is a gorgeous wine to drink now and over the next 15-20 years, give or take. Sweet, floral and open, the 2019 offers lovely brightness and energy to match its mid-weight, nervy feel. Sweet dried cherry, mint, crushed flowers and savory notes all grace this soft, understated Barbaresco from the Produttori.

Perfumed and floral with hints of citrus. Strawberry. Medium-bodied with firm and fine tannins, and a bright and fresh finish. Pretty. Baby Barbaresco. Drink or hold.

92 points, James Suckling (Jul 2023)

The 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo has a medium ruby with an orange tinge. Aromas of anise, cranberry, and spice are followed by a medium-bodied red with fine tannins and an elegant lift. With notes of iron-rich earth, blood orange, and fresh acidity, I would enjoy this with a light chill, although it does have structure. A killer value, this is a good introduction to the wines of Pio Cesare without feeling dilute or watered down. Drink 2023-2030.

A lovely fragrance of camphor, iris and perfumed berry leads the nose. Linear, focused and delicious, the palate offers juicy red cherry, raspberry and cake spice alongside taut, refined tannins. It's young but already well-balanced, with bright acidity. Drink 2027–2034.

95 points, Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast (Sep 2022)

An elegant, vibrant red, with cherry and strawberry flavors shaded by rose, licorice and spice. This is all about balance and finesse, with a long, complex and mouthwatering aftertaste. Best from 2025 through 2042. 210 cases imported.

94 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Dec 2022)

Dark strawberries with lots of dried flowers, sandalwood and stone. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins and a fresh, complex finish. Firm and creamy at the end. Better in 2024 and onwards, but already beautiful.

94 points, James Suckling (Oct 2022)

The 2019 Barbaresco Bric Turot is the deepest and most potent of the three Barbarescos in the Prunotto range. Black cherry, graphite, spice, leather, menthol and smoke add to an impression of gravitas. The 2019 needs time to soften.

A pale ruby, and blended from 14 vineyard sites, the 2020 Barbaresco was tasted as a barrel sample. Spicy and pure, it is full of red berries with Asian spice and white pepper. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, with elegance and refinement throughout, approachable and fine tannins, no harsh edges, and a long-lasting floral finish. The 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo Gavarini is a gracious, perfumed wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. All of this is young-vine fruit from Barolo-designated vineyards. Spice, cedar, tobacco and mint lend notable aromatic presence. All this needs is a bit more mid-palate sweetness to balance tannins that are pretty incisive.

2018 Idda Rosso (750ml)
Nerello Mascalese from Etna, Sicily, Italy

91WA

Offering spice, depth and good definition, the Idda 2018 Etna Rosso was born in a challenging vintage. Summer hailstorms damaged much of the yields and meant that fruit management was completed manually and with extra care, cluster by cluster, to make sure only the best bunches remained on the vines. That hard work paid off to produce a delicate, almost subdued expression from powerful Etna in which more attention is given to the soft fruit and berry nuances. The wine sports a fresh and fruit-forward style with streamlined fruit weight and an almost ethereal personality. Spice, tar and resin fill in the rear.

2018 Elio Altare Barolo (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

94WA 94JS 94WI 92V

A classic expression from vintner Elio Altare and his talented team, the 2018 Barolo is an elegant and streamlined wine. It is made from a blend of fruit from various parcels in Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, La Morra and Novello (with 11,700 bottles produced in this vintage). Aged in neutral barrique for 24 months, the wine shows a linear and focused personality with tart cherry, aniseed, crushed rock and blue flower. It's best suited for near or medium-term consumption.

94 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Aug 2022)

This is delicate with aromas of cherries, chocolate, cinnamon, dried orange peel and nutmeg. Medium- to full-bodied with firm, slightly chewy yet juicy tannins. Lively and toned with lots of energy and fresh cherries, blood orange and crushed stones. Builds up nicely on the palate to show real power. Better from 2025.

94 points, James Suckling (Jan 2023)

The 2018 Elio Altare Barolo is very fragrant, with hints of crushed iris, meadow flowers and spices. This is followed by oak spice, nutmeg and cinnamon notes. Comparing this with the 2017, I like the 2018 much better. The tannins are even finer and less dry and there is a nice, pleasing freshness and juiciness on the finish. The wine feels less heavy and dense than the 2017 and so it flows pleasantly and easily across the palate. Wait one to two years, drink for up 15-20.

94 points, Susan Hulme, Wine Independent (Jul 2022)

The 2018 Barolo is a gorgeous entry-level wine. Actually, it is an entry-level wine just in name. Racy and pliant, with terrific purity and fine balance, the 2018 is positively stellar. Crushed red berry fruit, flowers, mint, licorice and rose petal flesh out in this gorgeous, captivating Barolo from the Altare family. Vineyard sites are Sarmassa, Badarina and Novello.

2020 Vigneti Vecchio Sciare Vive Etna Rosso (750ml)
From Etna, Sicily, Italy

Wild berries, peppery herbs, hints of cinnamon and a mix of underbrush and wet stone introduce the 2020 Etna Rosso Sciare Vive. This is smoky both in the glass and on the palate, with a juicy wave of ripe red and black berries offset by a subtle twang of sour citrus and nervous acidity. The Sciare Vive leaves a caking of minerality, as well as fine tannins to linger, as it fades long and lightly structured with rosy inner florals that resonate on. This is beautiful today, but it should also hold up well through medium-term cellaring.
