2020 Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma, California
B-21 Top Recommendation

Consistently a top-quality choice for Cab fans seeking value, the 93 pt. 2020 Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley hits the mark again, revealing bright, savory fruit balanced by smooth tannins on a velvety plush finish reflecting its Knights Valley origins and a knock-out value unbeatably bargain priced to enjoy often.

Among the first to recognize the region’s potential for growing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Beringer has owned and farmed its vineyards in Knights Valley for over a half century, first to feature it on a label in 1974 and instrumental in the AVA gaining an official designation in 1983. Situated in a pastoral setting northwest of the winery, Beringer’s sustainably farmed 600-acre vineyard in Knights Valley is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of other Bordeaux varietals in well-draining, rocky volcanic soils, enjoying the warmest daytime temperatures in Sonoma with cool evenings that preserve the grapes’ acidity. Crafted as a Bordeaux-style blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot, winemaker Ryan Rech aged the enticing 2020 Beringer Knights Valley Cab for 15 months in 33% new French oak, yielding fresh, juicy fruit with signature Knights Valley notes of wild sage and black olive and a supple velvety texture that’s hard to resist.

Described as a “full throttle Cabernet” that’s “sure to be a crowd pleaser” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the opulent 93 pt. 2020 Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley is a standout among its pricey Knights Valley peers, a smooth and satisfying Cab with a backbone for aging and an undervalued gem priced to enjoy without hesitation.

2018 Buehler Vineyards Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Labeled by the Wine Advocate as, "One of the great values in Napa Cabernet Sauvignon year-in, year-out," Buehler Vineyards continues to remain under the radar, despite outstanding 90+ point ratings year over year. Located in the hills just below Howell Mountain with an incredible vista over the Conn Valley, Buehler has been one of the true family-owned gems in the Napa Valley for more than four decades, producing both an entry level Napa Cab and the site specific "Estate" Cab on its 300 acres of vineyards. Sourced from higher elevations across steeply sloped hillsides with eastern exposures, the exceptional 2018 Buehler Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is an age-worthy Cab with layers of structure, featuring pure black fruits, nuances of earth, and velvety polished tannins.

Purchased in 1970 by John & Helen Buehler, production expanded over the next decade, enough to hire a then unknown 25-year-old winemaker named Heidi Barrett. Now considered a superstar winemaker for creating some of Napa's most esteemed wines including Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle and Grace Family, Barrett firmly established Buehler’s reputation for exceptional quality early on. John's son and grandson now run operations with winemaker David Cronin at the helm, whose experience includes tenure at Joseph Phelps and Far Niente, where he was the founding winemaker of Dolce, before bringing his talents to Buehler in 1993.

Reflecting the estate's reputation for over-delivering at a terrific value, founder John Buehler believes that quality Napa Cab should be accessible to anyone who wants to enjoy it every day. With a backbone of bold and powerful mountain fruits from a stellar vintage, the 2018 Buehler Vineyards Estate Cabernet Sauvignon features the complexity and structure to develop for years to come. It remains true to its founder's beliefs, a 94pt Cab that can be enjoyed as an everyday indulgence.

94V 92WA

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is ample, bold and creamy. Graphite, dried herbs, lavender, blackberry and mocha infuse the 2018 with striking layers of nuance. Medium in body yet full of flavor, the 2018 hits all the right notes.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2021)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and expressive notes of crushed blackberries, wild blueberries and cassis plus suggestions of bay leaves, clove oil and unsmoked cigars with a hint of cardamom. Medium-bodied and elegantly styled, the palate is chock-full of bright, crunchy black fruit with subtle, invigorating dried herbs accents and approachable, grainy tannins, finishing with a lively lift. Impressively priced for the quality here, it is drinking beautifully right now, and should cellar for a good 12 years+. Stock up!

2021 Vina Robles Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)

From “one of the best ever” vintages in Paso Robles according to James Suckling, the lush and alluring 93 pt. 2021 Vina Robles Cabernet Sauvignon boasts rich, aromatic dark fruit with notes of spice and earthy garrigue balanced by bright acidity on a smooth, velvety finish, a bargain priced Cab certain to thrill Paso Robles fans and any California Cab lover seeking an outstanding value to enjoy often.

Located three miles east of downtown Paso Robles, Vina Robles was established by Swiss-born Hans Nef and his longtime friend and business associate Hans–R. Michel in the mid-1990’s, planting the first of what would later become six vineyards in Paso Robles and releasing their first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1999. Now managed by Hans’ daughters Michele and Nicole, Vina Robles is renowned as one of Paso’s top growers with over 1,800 acres of vineyards, sourcing the 2021 Vina Robles Cab from two sustainably farmed estate vineyards in distinctly different areas of the AVA. Located in the hilly terrain southeast of Santa Barbara, temperatures at the Huerhuero Vineyard are moderated by Pacific breezes coursing through the Templeton Gap that retain the grapes’ natural acidity, while the high-altitude Creston Valley Vineyard boasts shallow soils with granulated limestone that naturally limits yields and a southern exposure that guarantees even ripening, the blocks picked at optimal ripeness and sorted in the early morning to preserve the quality of the berries. After aging the parcels for 8 months in a mix of French, American and Hungarian oak barrels, winemaker Kevin Willenborg conducted extensive blending trials before selecting the final lots and blending in a little Petit Verdot to add structure, then aged the appealing 2021 Vina Robles Cabernet Sauvignon for 12 months longer in barrel to yield the combination of plush texture, juicy, opulent fruit, and ripe tannins that will have Paso Robles Cab lovers reaching for another pour.

Summed up by the Wine Enthusiast’s Matt Kettman as a “solidly satisfying style of Paso Robles Cab” that “will please many palates,” the enticing, full-bodied 93 pt. 2021 Vina Robles Cabernet Sauvignon delivers the goods at an outstanding bargain price, among the top-rated Paso Cabs from an outstanding vintage and without a doubt one of the region’s top values.

93WE 93JS

This solidly satisfying style of Paso Robles Cab will please many palates. Aromas of cocoa, black tea, coffee bean and elderberry decorate the nose. The palate is tense in structure but forgiving enough to present easily enjoyable flavors of elderberry jam, warm oak and dark herb.

93 points, Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2023)

Creamy, dark-fruited character with notes of walnuts, vanilla and dark licorice. Medium- to full-bodied with very fine, polished tannins. Sleek and lengthy, with a chalky texture at the end. Even and long. Drink or hold.

2021 McPrice Myers Bull By The Horns Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)

Described by Josh Raynolds of Vinous as “one of the Central Coast’s most under-the-radar, top-notch winemakers,” McPrice “Mac” Myers crafts the “Hard Working Wines” portfolio for everyday enjoyment, these top scoring selections sourced from the even and consistent 2021 vintage described as producing wines of “power and balance” by Decanter’s Brianne Cohen and among the region’s top values.

Releasing his first vintage nearly two decades ago, winemaker Mac Myers showcases the multiple terroirs and climates of the Central Coast from Santa Barbara to Paso Robles, establishing his Hard Working Wines series to craft “premium wines that don’t break the bank” and delivering “some of the best red wine values in the Central Coast” according to Vinous. Planted in the region’s limestone rich soils, Mac sources fruit from 25 acres of estate vineyards along with some of the most renowned vineyards on the Central Coast, the grapes enjoying sunny, warm days cooled by the maritime influence of the Pacific that allow for extended development on the vine while preserving fresh acidity.Aged for 10 months in stainless steel tanks and 20% new French oak, the full-bodied 94 pt. 2021 Bull by the Horns Cabernet Sauvignon boasts juicy vibrant fruit with bright acidity and soft, supple tannins structured to drink well over the next few years. Described as “a flavorful and balanced style of Zinfandel” by the Wine Enthusiast’s Matt Kettmann, the robust 94 pt. 2021 McPrice Myers Pound For Pound Zinfandel was aged in a mix of neutral French and American oak barrels, puncheons, and concrete tanks for 10 months, yielding juicy brambly fruit and well balanced acidity, delivering “the best bang for your buck” in Paso according to Mac. Aged in a mix of neutral French barrels for 10 months, the rich 94 pt. 2021 McPrice Myers Right Hand Man Syrah offers juicy, savory fruit hinting of peppery spice that’s “easy to drink” according to the Wine Advocate’s Erin Larkin, revealing notable complexity on a bright, smooth finish.

Summed up as offering “ridiculously good drinking for not much money,” Jeb Dunnuck describes the top rated McPrice Myers reds as “character-filled, high-quality, yet value-priced wines,” all drinking deliciously upon release and bargain priced for fans of bold Central Coast reds seeking a great deal to enjoy often.

Deep ruby, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Bull By The Horns has pleasingly herbal touches of bay leaves and dried herbs over a core of blackcurrant, game meat, tar and pencil shavings. “A very strong, if not truly exceptional vintage for Napa Valley”

Jeb Dunnuck

A benchmark Napa Cab from a “classic vintage in the making” according to James Suckling, there’s much to like about the powerful and luxurious 95 pt. 2021 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon, its layers of fresh, juicy dark fruit well balanced by bright, vibrant acidity with a long and complex finish, continuing the legacy of Quintessa founder Agustin Huneeus Sr. as one of Coombsville’s pioneering vintners and a top value among Napa Cabs that’s ready to enjoy over the next decade.

Painted in somber black and topped with an ominous, gothic style steeple, the striking 1870’s Victorian mansion called the Faust Haus is located 25 miles north of Coombsville near St. Helena on a hillside overlooking the lush valley floor, its modern decorator-designed tasting rooms and expansive outdoor verandas reflecting the signature luxurious style of the Faust Cabernet Sauvignon. Renowned as the CEO who transformed Concha y Toro into a global brand before becoming a leader in the California wine industry, longtime vintner Agustin Huneeus recognized the potential of the lesser known Coombsville long before it became an AVA and purchased the 113-acre Lewis Dairy Farm east of the town of Napa in 1998 to plant Cabernet Sauvignon, Faust now one of the appellation’s oldest vineyards and joined over the last two decades by some of the Napa’s top winemakers including Andy Erickson and Paul Hobbs. Located in one of Napa’s coolest subzones with temperatures nearly 10 degrees lower than most of the region, the 128-acre hillside Faust vineyard is planted in well-draining rocky, volcanic soils influenced by fog and marine breezes from nearby San Pablo Bay, the extended growing season allowing the grapes to develop complex flavors while preserving acidity. Sourced from a low yielding vintage that produced smaller concentrated grapes, winemaker David Jelinek blended mostly Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coombsville estate along with smaller lots from mountain and valley terroirs throughout Napa and aged the 2021 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon for 20 months in 25% new French oak, yielding a deliciously smooth Cab that’s already drinking beautifully and built for years of enjoyment.

From the legendary founder of Quintessa and a pioneer of Napa’s Coombsville AVA, the rich and satisfying 95 pt. 2021 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon offers a harmonious balance of luscious ripe fruit and tantalizing acidity from a superb vintage, an affordable luxury for Napa Cab fans seeking an outstanding value that promises pleasurable drinking for years to come.

Inviting aromas of ripe blackcurrants and blackberries as well as crushed walnuts, cedar andbark. Full-bodied, creamy and structured with firm, polished tannins. Balanced and even with a lingering finish. Better after 2026.

95 points, James Suckling (Sep 2023)

Packed and broad in feel, with a ganache note draped over black currant, blackberry and steeped cherry. Licorice root and alder smoke flavors check in on the finish as the fruit pumps through, ending with a flash of violet. Hard to resist now, but this has some development ahead. Drink now through 2036. 50,000 cases made.

94 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Feb 2024)

Focused on cabernet from the Faust estate in Coombsville, this includes fruit from the Huneeus family’s vineyards in Yountville and Oak Knoll, all relatively cool districts that combine in a brisk, red-fruited cabernet with cherry freshness. A bright young thing with a lot to say, it tastes like just-picked fruit, its spicy tannins supple and gracious, cool and lasting.

2019 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley, California

Described as “a veritable Cabernet Sauvignon tour de force” by the Wine Spectator’s James Laube, the lush and concentrated 2019 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley lives up to the hype, revealing fresh aromatic fruit hinting of spiced vanilla and rustic herbs with supple, velvet tannins and a signature silky smooth finish, delivering Silver Oak’s consistently exceptional quality and sheer drinkability at a best on the market price.

Located just north of Healdsburg in Sonoma County’s warmest appellation, the Silver Oak Alexander Valley winery features a modern barn-inspired tasting room with floor to ceiling glass walls framing panoramic vineyard views, the surrounding 75 acres planted exclusively to Cabernet Sauvignon in the Alexander Valley AVA. Founded as a partnership in 1972 to produce a single wine from Cabernet Sauvignon, Silver Oak was established by Ray Duncan and Justin Meyers on a 258-acre dairy property on the Oakville Cross Road, the dairy barn’s location halfway between the Silverado Trail and Oakville inspiring its name. Brought in by Duncan to craft the wine, founder and former co-owner Justin Meyer was driven to create an American version of Chateau Latour, but instead using American oak to age the Cabernet Sauvignon in barrels first purchased from Beaulieu Vineyards. Now completely family-owned and run by Ray’s sons David and Tim Duncan, Silver Oak produced the 2019 Alexander Valley with 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, always a higher percentage than its Napa bottling, blending it from the Alexander Estate and the Miraval and Red Tail Vineyards at the southern end of the AVA close to the Russian River as well as Crazy Creek a few miles north of the winery, the diverse growing conditions and rocky volcanic soils adding rich complexity to the final blend. Sourced from “a brilliant vintage for Cabernet Sauvignon” according to Jeb Dunnuck, winemaker David Weiss, formerly at Patz and Hall and Antinori’s Antica Napa Valley, crafted the final blend of the 2019 Silver Oak Alexander Valley prior to aging, a signature of the harmonious Silver Oak style, transferring it to American oak barrels from Silver Oak’s own cooperage and aging it for 24 months, yielding a lush, concentrated Cab with well-integrated tannins that’s ready to drink upon release and built to cellar for decades.

Gaining “a legion of cult-like fans for nearly 40 years with a consistent, drinkable style” according to the Wine Spectator’s James Laube, Silver Oak collectors and lovers of smooth, age worthy California Cabs won’t need convincing to stock up on the smooth and satisfying 2019 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting its 50 year quality legacy and promising pleasurable drinking at value pricing that makes it easy to pull the cork more often.

Aged in 50% new and 50% second-use American Oak from the Duncan family's The Oak cooperage in Higbee, Missouri. Matt Duncan joined me for my tasting, and he says the Petit Verdot in the blend, of which there is 0.4%, is co-fermented with the Cabernet Sauvignon, intended to bring focus to the Cabernet fruit. A compelling, brooding, muscular rendition of Cabernet from Alexander Valley with gorgeous boysenberry notes, black currants, and rose petals laced with vanillin notes and toasty oak. Medium to full-bodied with black currants, ripe blackberry and black cherry notes framed by velvety tannins laced with that irresistible vanillin note. Toasty oak spices lend a hint of sweetness, balanced by grippy acidity. Long and complex, revealing umami, garrigue, and crushed slatestone on the finish. It's a terrific wine from the Alexander Valley.

Garnering top ratings across the board placing it among Napa’s top values, the silky and enticing 92 pt. 2019 Bella Union Cabernet Sauvignon offers lush dark fruit hinting of savory spice and toasty vanilla with luscious, smooth tannins, sourced from an outstanding vintage producing “big, bold wines that show the extroverted side of Napa Valley,” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous and following in the footsteps of Far Niente's high scoring Cabs at a fraction of the price.

Established by the team behind Far Niente and Nickel and Nickel in 2012, Bella Union is based on Bella Oaks Lane in Rutherford, deriving its name from the road formerly known as the Bella Union Roadway that led through the Mayacamas Mountains to the Bella Union Mining Company in the 1880's and crafting its Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend primarily from its 25-acre estate vineyard. Long considered a prime growing site, the Bella Oaks vineyard designation has appeared on the labels of esteemed wineries throughout the years including Heitz Cellar and more recently Staglin, the area’s well-draining, gravelly soils known for contributing Rutherford’s characteristic minerality and fine tannins. Planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with vines ranging up to 30 years of age, the Bella Union vineyard boasts the ideal combination of warm, sunny days and cool evenings typical of its location on the western Rutherford Bench, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly and developing layers of rich complexity. Blending 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot with small amounts of Cab Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the appealing 2019 Bella Union Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced mainly from the Rutherford vineyard as well as parcels in Calistoga, St. Helena and Oak Knoll and aged in 50% new French oak barrels for 18 months, described as “supple and easygoing, with a nicely textured, silky feel on the finish” by the Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski and poised to deliver pleasurable drinking now and over the coming decade.

Impeccably crafted to reflect the quality and consistency of Far Niente, Antonio Galloni of Vinous sums up the 92 pt. 2019 Bella Union Cabernet Sauvignon as a “racy, overt Cabernet” with “a ton to offer” while the Wine Enthusiast’s Virginie Boone calls it a “great value" with "wide appeal,” the 2019 Bella Union an easy call for anyone seeking a smooth and delicious top scoring Napa Cab at a bargain price.

A seductive style, with a creamy, polished feel to the mix of plum pâte de fruit, cassis and raspberry puree flavors, which have a subtle sheen of singed vanilla toast and light savory flecks through the finish. Drink now through 2032. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 10,300 cases made.

92 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Aug 2022)

This is a well-made red, blended with 13% Merlot as well as small percentages of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Thick and concentrated, it develops in the glass to show a nice refinement of woody oak, dried herb, cedar and black cherry, offering great value and wide appeal.

92 points, Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast (Jul 2022)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is a gorgeous wine to drink now and over the next few years. Crushed red berry fruit, sweet spice and rose petal are nicely pushed forward in this succulent, mid-weight Cabernet. Silky tannins wrap it all together. This racy, overt Cabernet has a ton to offer.

91 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2022)

Aromas of dark plums, dark cherries, cloves, pine needles and sweet spices. Medium-bodied with firm tannins. Structured and chewy with a fruity, cherry-like finish. Drink from 2023.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is based on 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, and the rest Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. It’s an outstanding wine, offering old school, complex notes of dried herbs, leather, spice box, and both red and black fruits in a charming, medium-bodied, balanced, satisfying style. Drink it over the coming 10-12 years or more.

90 points, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2022)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 8% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. Establishing Vasse Felix in the late 1960s nearly three hours south of the Western Australian capital of Perth, founder Tom Cullity was the first to plant commercial vineyards on the remote Margaret River peninsula, gaining international recognition over the next decades for crafting “outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon” according to the Wine Advocate’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown. Owned by the Holmes family since 1987, Vasse Felix has expanded its estate holdings to over 300 hectares spanning four distinct sites on the river’s ancient gravel beds, enjoying a warm, dry Mediterranean climate that encourages optimal ripening while sea breezes from the surrounding Southern and Indian Oceans preserve the grapes' natural acidity. Described as having “a sure hand with red wines” by Vinous critic Josh Raynolds, longtime chief winemaker Virginia Willcox blended mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Malbec and a little Petit Verdot for the 2020 Vasse Felix Filius Cab, aging each varietal separately in 10% new French oak with the remainder in 1-5 year old barriques for 12 months before blending, her restrained use of new oak yielding “balanced elegance” according to the Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski.

From an outstanding 2020 vintage considered one of the region's best ever, the muscular 93 pt. 2020 Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon offers rich concentrated fruit balanced by smooth, integrated tannins, mirroring the Margaret River’s movement “towards wines with greater balance and refinement” according to Vinous critic Angus Hughson, an appealing, easy-drinking Cab at an equally appealing price.

From cult favorite winemaker Eric Jensen of Booker Vineyards, the full-flavored 97 pt. 2021 My Favorite Neighbor Blanc Chardonnay boasts luscious ripe fruit hinting of spice with refreshing acidity and a creamy, lingering finish, crafted in a rich, concentrated style certain to appeal to fans of Napa Valley Chards and available at an unbeatable price.

After purchasing 100 acres on the west side of Paso Robles in 2001, entrepreneur Eric Jensen began with the goal of growing top-quality fruit, eventually supplying A-list wineries including Justin Smith of Saxum and his neighbor Stephan Asseo of L'Aventure Wines before releasing his first Booker Vineyards wine to great critical acclaim in 2005. Described as “sleek, powerful and stylish Paso Robles wines that appeal to a broad audience” by Eric Guido of Vinous, Jensen's My Favorite Neighbor or “MFN” project was initially named as an homage to his neighbor and mentor Stephan Asseo but quickly came to honor his entire network of growers throughout Paso Robles and their unwavering dedication to producing quality fruit. Crafted from Chardonnay sourced from select vineyards in San Luis Obispo, Paso and to the south in the Edna Valley, Eric aged the elegant 2021 MFN Blanc Chardonnay for eight months in a combination of new and neutral French oak barrels, crafting it to be ready to enjoy now with “the depth and balance to mature beautifully over time” according to Eric Guido of Vinous.

Sourcing top quality Chardonnay from his Paso neighbors for far less than the price of Napa grown fruit, Eric Jensen’s 97 pt. 2021 My Favorite Neighbor Blanc Chardonnay offers the lush mouth coating flavors and layered complexity typical of a top rated Napa Chard at a fraction of the price, guaranteed to make Eric’s favorite neighbors equally popular among fans of richly styled Chardonnay seeking a great deal.

Spanning 160 acres within five AVA’s, the grapes were hand harvested from the estate’s sustainably farmed vineyards throughout the Napa Valley including Stags Leap, Howell Mountain, Oakville, Rutherford and Carneros, the outstanding 2021 vintage producing below average yields of small, intensely flavored berries. A blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Merlot, Petite Sirah and Malbec, winemaker Michael Beaulac aged the 2021 Pine Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon in a combination of 35% new French oak, 15% new American oak and the remaining 50% in neutral French oak barrels for 18 months, yielding alluring fresh fruit hinting of vanilla and forest with lush, integrated tannins promising longevity.
