I began using B21 about 2 years ago. Wish I had found them sooner. They represent about 70% to 80 % of my liquor buys. Only the odd things are purchased elsewhere. Once you use them you will be hooked. Inventory, professional staff, quick shipping and competative pricing are what I really appreciate. Try them, you have nothing to lose and much to gain.

2021 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Of the names that define ultra-classic Napa Valley Cabernet, few compare to the history and pedigree of Dunn. This Howell Mountain estate has been turning out towering, collectible masterpieces that compete with the best of Bordeaux since 1979, beginning with founder Randy Dunn and continuing with his son Mike.

The Howell Mountain Cabernet is a monumental wine in any vintage, but in a neo-classical vintage like 2021, it hits all the marks that have define any benchmark expression from Dunn. A trio of 98-point reviews lead the way in a critical line of unanimous glowing acclaim. The wine's "incredibly intense, mineral-driven profile" fits the Dunn paradigm perfectly, while Antonio Galloni declares it "one of the most polished young wines I have ever tasted from Dunn ... What a wine!" The Howell Mountain Cabernet routinely draws comparisons to the titans of Pauillac, and in the spectacular 2021 vintage, it more than holds its own among the world's most cellar-worthy Cabernets.

A deeper, richer, more powerful wine, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain sports a deep ruby/plum hue to go with a Pauillac-like nose of blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, and lead pencil notes. It's full-bodied, incredibly concentrated, has the classic Howell Mountain tannic structure, and a gorgeous finish. Give bottles 7-8 years if you can and enjoy over the following 2-3 decades.

98+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2025)

Robust and brooding aromas of mulberry bush, violets, cedar, cocoa and graphite. The palate is full-bodied with refined tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of blackcurrants, spices, tobacco leaves and crushed river stones. Very bold and generous, with a refined structure that will age gracefully. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.

98 points, James Suckling (Dec 2024)

The colour of the Howell Mountain Cabernet is noticeably darker than the Napa Valley bottling, showcasing an incredibly intense, mineral-driven profile. The tannins have an ironstone-like quality—firm, structured, and reminiscent of that "iron fist in a velvet glove" metaphor. The palate has remarkable density, balanced by a pure, vibrant mix of tart red berries and black cherries. The tannins become more assertive, but as they gradually soften, a rush of juicy blood orange acidity emerges. The wine carries intriguing layers of sagebrush, cedarwood, and warm brown spices, delivering ample power and complexity. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon fermented in stainless steel tanks, aged up to 32 months in 100% new French oak. The first vintage of Dunn Vineyards produced was the 1979 Howell Mountain Cabernet. Founder Randy Dunn's son, Mike, joined in 1999. As of 2023, Ted Kizor was named winemaker, working in tandem with the Dunns.

98 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter (Aug 2024)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is one of the most polished young wines I have ever tasted from Dunn. Blackberry, graphite, crushed rocks, lavender, espresso, licorice and spice saturate the palate. There’s plenty of Howell Mountain tannin and acid, but in 2021, those elements are totally woven into the wine’s heady, luxurious fabric. Even so, I would not plan on opening a bottle any time soon. The 2021 spent 31 months in 100% new French oak, pretty much the norm here. What a wine!

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Dec 2024)

This displays the dark, dense fruit of the AVA, but there’s lovely polish and freshness, with violet and ink notes pulling along the core of dark currant and blackberry fruit. Offers a ramrod of licorice and tar on the finish but shows the cut and drive to match its heft. A late flash of sweet bay adds an alluring hint. Patience is required, though. Best from 2028 through 2045. 2,583 cases made.

97 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Jul 2025)

Dunn's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is richer, denser and more concentrated than the Napa Valley bottling but still hits the winery's hallmark notes of cedar, cassis, blueberries, pine needles and rubbed sage. It's medium to full-bodied, weighing in at just under 14% alcohol, but the tannins are ripe and relatively silky, and the wine finishes with tremendous length and ample harmony.

2019 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

98V 96WS #6 Top 100

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is outrageously beautiful. A wine of extraordinary purity, the 2019 dazzles right out of the gate. The tannins are nearly silky for a young Howell Mountain Cabernet. Red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, rose petal and pomegranate all build in this sumptuous, explosive Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2019 is one of the most elegant Cabernets I have tasted here, and that is saying something What a wine!

98 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

Lushly fruited, this sends waves of crushed plum, boysenberry compote and blackberry paste out from the core, with a strong undercurrent of cast iron and smoldering tobacco to boot. Grippy and dense, but with a sense of polish and a note of purity in the guise of a pretty violet echo. Best from 2025 through 2040. 3,750 cases made.

2021 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

95D 93JD 93V

The wine presents a deep ruby colour with a magenta rim. They produce just under 3,000 cases of this Napa Valley-designated Cabernet Sauvignon, constituting about 60% of their total production. The blend is 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Cabernet Franc aged in 72% new French oak barrels for up to 32 months. This young, restrained wine exudes both power and elegance. Aromas of spicy cedarwood dominate, supported by a vibrant core of crunchy red berries, firm, taut tannins, and delicate floral hints of red rose petals. There's an enticing confected note weaving through the cedarwood character. Overall, this is a wine built to age and tasted with Mike Dunn, who said that the wine was opened a couple of hours before tasting and double-decanted. I’d recommend holding off until at least 2028 before popping corks. The fruit sources are 45% Oak Knoll, 37% Howell Mountain, and 12% Napa Valley, with 6% coming from Yountville AVAs. The first vintage of Dunn Vineyards produced was the 1979 Howell Mountain Cabernet. Founder Randy Dunn's son, Mike, joined in 1999. As of 2023, Ted Kizor was named winemaker, working in tandem with the Dunns.

95 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter (Aug 2024)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is based on 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Cabernet Franc that was brought up in 72% new French oak. It has a vivid ruby plum hue as well as a great nose of cassis and framboise intermixed with sappy flowers, graphite, and some tobacco notes. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, with ripe tannins, and a great finish, it's a killer example of this cuvée.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2025)

Dunn’s 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) hits the palate with waves of inky dark fruit, mocha, leather and spice. This is an especially overt style for Dunn. Then again, the Napa Valley Cabernet is designed to offer more early approachability than the top wines here. All this needs is a bit of time in bottle for the French oak to integrate further. Readers will find a dense, almost shockingly rich wine from Randy and Mike Dunn. Hints of graphite, sage, menthol and licorice kick on the long, beautifully persistent finish. A dollop of Cabernet Franc adds aromatic presence, something Randy Dunn quietly did in this wine in the past. The Napa Valley Cabernet is mostly from the estate, with a bit of purchased fruit from sites in Yountville and Oakville.
