Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma, California

Consistently a top-quality choice for Cab fans seeking value, the 93 pt. 2020 Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley hits the mark again, revealing bright, savory fruit balanced by smooth tannins on a velvety plush finish reflecting its Knights Valley origins and a knock-out value unbeatably bargain priced to enjoy often.

Among the first to recognize the region’s potential for growing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Beringer has owned and farmed its vineyards in Knights Valley for over a half century, first to feature it on a label in 1974 and instrumental in the AVA gaining an official designation in 1983. Situated in a pastoral setting northwest of the winery, Beringer’s sustainably farmed 600-acre vineyard in Knights Valley is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of other Bordeaux varietals in well-draining, rocky volcanic soils, enjoying the warmest daytime temperatures in Sonoma with cool evenings that preserve the grapes’ acidity. Crafted as a Bordeaux-style blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot, winemaker Ryan Rech aged the enticing 2020 Beringer Knights Valley Cab for 15 months in 33% new French oak, yielding fresh, juicy fruit with signature Knights Valley notes of wild sage and black olive and a supple velvety texture that’s hard to resist.

Described as a “full throttle Cabernet” that’s “sure to be a crowd pleaser” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the opulent 93 pt. 2020 Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley is a standout among its pricey Knights Valley peers, a smooth and satisfying Cab with a backbone for aging and an undervalued gem priced to enjoy without hesitation.

A full-bodied red with redcurrants, rust and black chocolate aromas and flavors. Savory. Granular soft tannins. Very drinkable. Give it a year or two to make it even better.

2019 Blackbird Arise Proprietary Red (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

93JD 92WA 92JS 91V

I loved the nose on the 2019 Arise Proprietary Red, and it's loaded with red and black fruits, darker herbs, chocolate, and peppery nuances. Slightly fresher than the 2018, it's medium to full-bodied, has a great texture, ripe tannins, and shines for its elegance and balance.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2021)

The 2019 Arise Proprietary Red is a seductive, svelte blend of 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc, 8% Syrah and 5% Petit Verdot. Full-bodied but nicely supple and polished, it delivers notes of blueberries, cherries, dark chocolate and mocha, then caps those off with a long, velvety finish. Maybe it could use a bit more muscle and concentration, but there's no denying its upfront appeal and elegance. In the context of Napa, it's even reasonably priced.

92 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Sep 2022)

Blueberry, blackcurrant and dark-mushroom aromas follow through to a medium body with fine tannins and a juicy, savory finish. Tangy orange rind at the end. 36% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 21% cabernet franc, 8% syrah and 5% petit verdot. Drink now.

92 points, James Suckling (May 2022)

The 2019 Arise is bold, juicy and super-expressive. A burst of inky dark fruit, licorice, lavender and spice lends terrific immediacy to this succulent, entry-level offering from Blackbird.

2016 Blackbird Paramour Proprietary Red (750ml)
Cabernet Franc from Napa, California

94WA 94V 93JD

Composed of 82% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2016 Paramour Proprietary Red is deep garnet-purple colored and features notes of tar, tilled black soil, fungi and oolong tea over a core of red and black currants, black raspberries and crushed plums. Medium-bodied with a chewy, stewed tea-laced frame, it delivers loads of bright, refreshing flavors and a quiet, earthy intensity on the finish. 1,545 cases were made.

94 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Oct 2018)

The 2016 Paramour is one of the best wines I have tasted from Blackbird. Dark, succulent and inviting, the 2016 possesses terrific depth and nuance. Chocolate, black cherry, spice, new leather and menthol build in this racy, vibrant Cabernet Franc-based blend. Most of this fruit is sourced from Stagecoach, Hudson and Crocker Starr.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Dec 2018)

Lastly, the Cabernet Franc-dominated cuvée is the 2016 Paramour Proprietary Red Wine. Deep purple-colored, with fabulous complexity in its blackberry, cherry, strawberry, incense, and floral aromas and flavors, this beauty is medium to full-bodied, tight, and straight on the palate. Very much in the style of the other 2016s from this estate, it has enough structure to require 3-5 years of bottle age and should be long-lived.

2018 Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

98JS 97JD

Wild blackberry, cassis, dark chocolate, tobacco and dark spice on the nose. Dried violets, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, powdery tannins and a creamy texture. Intense, yet restrained and refined, with a solid core of dark berries and bitter chocolate. Really focused and crafted with exemplary Napa cabernet character. Try from 2024.

98 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is based on 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, brought up in 90% new French oak. It’s a beautiful wine that shows the vintage’s pure, elegant, yet concentrated style perfectly. Gorgeous crème de cassis, violets, blueberries, and cedar pencil notes emerge from the glass, and this beauty builds incrementally on the palate, with full-bodied richness, a lively, pure, layered texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It can be enjoyed any time over the coming 20-25 years.

2022 Beringer Luminus Chardonnay (750ml)
Chardonnay from Napa, California

93JS 92V

Mandarin orange, quince and apple blossom with cheese rind, almonds, baking spices and a touch of saline minerality. Medium-bodied with very bright, crisp acidity. Beautiful harmony and freshness to it. Aged for eight months in 10% new French oak barrels. Drink now.

93 points, James Suckling (Dec 2023)

The 2022 Chardonnay Luminus is a rich, dynamic white. Orchard fruit, white flowers, mint and a kiss of French oak are front and center. There's terrific texture and depth. Lifted floral overtones add character to the finish.
