Malbec Mendoza uses grapes from all of Achaval Ferrer’s vineyards in every major terroir of Mendoza. Fermented for only a brief period at a high temperature (almost 31ºC), the wine spent eight months in third-use French barrels. Deep purple in the glass, it delivers an inky, kirsch pastry nose with red fruit jam, flowers and raw herbal notes. Complex and intense, it is extremely relaxed and well-rounded in the mouth, with refined tannins. An intelligently conceived, enjoyable wine.

A bright and breezy Malbec from a terroir-driven winery, with fruit taken from vineyards in Lujan de Cuyo and Uco Valley at an average of 1,000m. It's aged for 12 months in concrete vats to preserve the fruit purity, packed full of juicy, ripe raspberry and savoury plum with gentle hints of liquorice and spice.

The unoaked 2018 Malbec Clásico 2018 comes from a very good year, after 2013 and 2014, which were very difficult years, and 2015 and 2016 that saw lots of rain. According to winemaker Leo Erazo, it's the most complex wine to make because of the many different sources of grapes, growers and the volume they make. But they planted 22 hectares in 2012, so they use more of their own grapes; the wine now has some 30% of grapes from Valle de Uco, which is always a cooler region that is noticed in the wine, which is very balanced, harmonious and easy to drink. It has a dusty note and fine tannins; it's elegant and especially very drinkable.

The 2019 Selección Malbec was produced from older vineyards in the Valle de Uco and only part of the wine matured in used barrels, so it has a nice combination between fruit and spice. It has more depth than the regular Malbec and feels more complete than the 2020 version that I also tasted next to it. It has good complexity and texture. It finishes dry and clean.

Alta Vista's 2018 Malbec Terroir Selection is a blend of grapes from the Uco Valley and Luján de Cuyo and was aged for 12 months in 1/3 new barrels. The nose delivers pristine notes of plum and cherry over subtle aromas from the aging process that leave plenty of room for the layer of violets and country herbs. On the palate, the tannins are firm and freshness juicy with a finely grained texture while the finish is intense and packed with fresh fruit.

The 2018 Terroir Selection Malbec blends grapes from their vineyards in different subzones of Mendoza, 68% of the grapes come from the Albaneve vineyard (Campo de los Andes, Valle de Uco), a little higher this year, 12% come from the Temis vineyard (El Cepillo, Valle de Uco), 10% from the Azamor vineyard (Las Compuertas, Luján de Cuyo) and 10% from the Alizarine vineyard (Las Compuertas, Luján de Cuyo), so more grapes from Valle de Uco than before. 2018 was a cooler vintage compared with 2017, and the higher percentage of grapes from Valle de Uco also helped to give the wine more freshness. It fermented in small concrete vats and matured in French oak barrels for 12 months, and the oak feels very integrated. It's clean, fresh and balanced, with varietal and floral aromas, fine-grained tannins and ripe fruit without excess. It has more and more the Valle de Uco profile, especially in the floral notes on the nose. 90,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020.

Susana Balbo's 2019 BenMarco Expresivo is 82% Malbec combined with 18% Cabernet Franc, both from the Uco Valley and was 70% aged in new barrels and the rest in used for 14 months. An intense purple in hue, the precise aromas include plum and blackcurrant with herbal notes and hints of jalapeño over a delicate bed of oak. In the mouth, it’s compact but juicy with a medium body and long-lasting, fruity flavor in which the finely grained tannins take charge to define a texture that stays delicate in spite of the overall vigor. A modern wine best left for at least a year.
