Impressive assessment of the 2016 vintage Chateauneuf du Pape, placing the vintage in the company of the very finest vintages of CDP in the last 40 years recalling 1978, 1990, 2007, and 2010. It is no surprise that collectors have been buying 2016 aggressively upon release, as you did with 2010. This is a vintage that can age but will reward early on as well. Irresistible. Global demand is evident, and stressing the market already. Now is the time to secure your allocations.

A prodigious effort, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hautes Brusquieres Cuvee Speciale was yet to be bottled during my June visit. It offers up sweet floral aromas, hints of thyme and rosemary and bold cherry fruit. Full-bodied and creamy-velvety in texture, it's a hugely seductive mouthful of wine that I found difficult to spit. If it emerges from the bottling process looking like this, buyers will have huge smiles on their faces.

Frenchman Julien Fayard is the winemaker at Purlieu. He grew up working at his uncle’s Chateau in Provence where his interest in wine was set for life. Leaving Provence he traveled to Bordeaux working at both Chateau Lafite-Rothschild in Pauillac and Smith Haut Laffite in Pessac-Leognan – a most serious foundation in Cabernet and the understanding the great wine is made in the vineyard. Before Purlieu, Julien worked at Quintessa and then five years as director of Atelier Melka gaining an intimate understanding of Napa Valley while connecting with top growers dedicated to quality – Andy Beckstoffer being one of those. Beckstoffer provides Purlieu fruit for three of their top bottlings; Georges III, To Kalon, and Missouri Hopper. Collectables indeed.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Le Pich features very pretty notes of crushed blueberries, blackberries and chocolate-covered cherries with hints of violets and cedar chest plus a waft of bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, packed with vibrant black fruits and plushly textured, this buxom beauty is ready for biz, finishing satisfyingly long and spicy.

2017 Coudoulet de Beaucastel (750ml)
Grenache from Côtes du Rhône, Rhône, France

Rhone lovers know well the Perrin family and the stable of remarkable wines they fashion; the often perfect, minuscule cuvee Hommage a Jacques Perrin, a tribute to the family patriarch and the greatest of ambassadors for Chateauneuf du Pape, to the limited, singular old vine Roussanne, and the more available Beaucastel Chateauneuf, both red and white. For value seekers, look no further than the Perrins' Coudoulet Rouge. The Coudoulet vineyard is located just outside the Chateauneuf du Pape zone (often called "Baby Beaucastel"). The synergies of this blend as expressed in the 2017 Coudoulet is just one more Perrin masterpiece.

Abundant, rich and ripe red fruit with lightly spiced pastry and quite brambly complexity. The palate has a super fleshy, bold and upfront-tannin shape. Fresh and easy. Drink now.

92 points, James Suckling (Oct 2019)

The 2017 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet De Beaucastel is a textbook example of this cuvée, and while it tends to be a relatively expensive Côtes Du Rhône, it merits the price. Complex garrigue, ground pepper, and earthy dark fruits all flow to a medium to full-bodied wine that has a polished, elegant texture as well as the sunny, Provençal style of the vintage. It’s capable of lasting for 15 years or more.
