White pepper and orange on a wave of high alcohol grow into a spicier proposition with allspice, apple, melon, Chinese pear, and mincemeat. Silky mouthfeel with candied orange, warm sherry notes, and pulsing spices, developing more of a waxy texture mid-palate, followed by a slightly bland ending of vanilla and star fruit. Water enhances the fruitiness, teasing out herbal notes and ground ginger.

Outside of the green glass bottle, this Speyside blend is a soft, light gold. Toffee dominates the aroma, with a little smoke and citrus mixed in. On the palate, it’s sweet, light, caramelly, with a whiff of smoke on the finish, reminiscent of some Irish whiskies. Very pleasant sipping.

Reinvention, reimagination, call it what you will, but Dewar’s master blender Stephanie Macleod’s introduction of first-fill bourbon cask finishing elevates this classic to the higher echelons of blended scotch whisky. It may seem a small gesture, but the result of combining the marrying and finishing processes is both captivatingly delicious and texturally silken, adding seemingly infinite layers of honey, vanilla, dried apricot, citrus, chocolate, and soft oak to the tasting experience, interwoven with a wisp of smoke. Without changing a beat of the blend’s 40 malts and grains, Macleod’s methods prove her mastery of the craft yet again.

At first, the scent is mild and sweet, but with time opens up to a distinct caramel aroma with a tinge of orange peel. Although fairly boozy on the palate at first sip, eventually this viscous, honey-colored spirit emerges as mellow and fruity, and faintly peated. A splash of water coaxes out more vanilla tones. Good value.

Creamy sweet foundation of vanilla fudge and caramel-coated almond. Plenty of fruit, too (golden raisin, honeyed peach, ripe nectarine, hint of banana bread). Richly textured, good weight (but not cloying), and the flavors combine seamlessly. A celebratory whisky indeed.

Ultimately, ozone. Silky palate delivery, with sweet sherry, honey, and dark chocolate-coated orange fondant creams, then a note of angelica. The finish offers spicy plain chocolate and a suggestion of sea salt.

Luscious on the palate, with subtle spice, a touch of ashy smoke, and principally big orchard fruit notes. Drying in the lengthy finish, with a wisp of smoke, brine, and peppery oak. Glen Scotia at its characterful best.
