Raw honey, peppery with a medicinal phenolic back ground. Vague suggestions of horse blanket and a musty graininess in the aroma also. Medium body, very crisp with a slick mouth feel. Mild lemon and fruity tartness swirls around with leafy, grassy and earthy flavours. Honey like sweetness within, malt character is a tad dry with biscuity flavours. Yeast adds a nutty dryness that is similar to aged walnuts. Spicy phenols give off herbal and medicinal flavour but not in an overwhelming way, clove pushes the envelope the most. Alcohol is runs estery with fruity flavours that suggest pineapple and plantains. Spiciness lingers and the dryness lends more nutty flavours in the end. Raw and complex yet oh so drinkable, impossible to tell it would have been from NY in a blind tasting. One of our favourites, bring a couple of 750 ml bottles to the dinner party and see if this sparks anyone?s interest away from wine.

Father Hennepin was a Belgian-born man of long ago, sent to the New World by church order in the late 17th century. He’s perhaps best known for his exploration of two waterfalls: Niagara Falls, and the only waterfall on the Mississippi river, St. Anthony Falls. This namesake saison has an aroma that shows off lemony zest, fresh spice, and mild honey sweetness. Its pale appearance belies the 7.7% ABV, as does Hennepin’s easy drinkability. Beginning with a delicate bready sweetness, the beer quickly moves into complex blends of fruit, spice, yeast, and mild floral hops. Effervescent scrubbing bubbles cleanse the palate, and subtle alcohol warmth and a medium body make Hennepin a perfect thirst-quencher.

Hennepin is a classic domestic saison, a benchmark for the style. Brewed with grains of paradise, ginger and sweet-orange peel, this is spicy and attractive right from the start, with additional aromas and flavors of pepper, pale malt, Anjou pear, underripe banana, tart citrus and fresh grass. Medium to light in body, this is remarkably balanced, with crisp, tingling carbonation that leads into the dry yet refreshing finish. A no-brainer for summer entertaining, just beware of the well-hidden alcohol.
