Fans of fine Sherry are the target market for this excellent, ethereal oloroso. The nose is clean and mild, with citrus, nuts and flower blossom. There’s nothing pushy or heavy about it; in fact, it’s so refined and layered that you don’t notice anything but the wine’s lovely buttery notes, toffee and coffee. Very demure and pure.

With the calm pace of a jerezano waking up from a siesta on an August afternoon, this Oloroso gradually begins to reveal its flavors in scents of caramel and smoke. It's sweet through the middle, with firm acidity accompanying rather than interrupting that sweetness. But in the end, the salinity and briny shellfish scents take over, leaving a dry and juicy taste that invites another glass…and another.

The NV Emperatriz Eugenia Very Rare Oloroso is produced from Palomino from a solera created in 1921 to celebrate the visit of French Empress Eugenia de Montijo. It reveals an old wine, brown-colored, with a nose of noble woods, hazelnuts and varnish, a medium- to full-bodied palate, round, glycerin-rich and ample, ending dry and a bit warm. Drink 2013-2016.

Has a smoky edge, with singed sandalwood and forest floor hints melded with bitter chocolate, powdered ginger, buckwheat and toffee notes. The long finish shows lovely cut and persistence. Drink now.
