Firm acidity and a chalky underpinning create a snappy, lip-smacking frame for the flavors of baked white cherry, star anise, ground ginger, chopped almond and biscuit. Finely meshed and harmonious, with the flavor range carried on the delicate, creamy mousse. Drink now through 2024.

The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvee Vendemiaire 1er Cru is soft, open-knit and wonderfully inviting. Citrus, white flowers, almonds and gently spiced notes are nicely woven together in this pretty, understated Champagne from Doyard. A touch of oak adds nuance without overpowering the wine's energy and precision. The current release is 50% 2013, 30% 2012 and 20% 2011, mostly from old vines in Vertus, with touches of fruit from a number of Grand Cru villages. This is a terrific showing. Disgorged: January 2019

Disgorged with four grams per liter dosage after 56 months sur lattes, the latest release of Doyard's NV Brut Premier Cru Cuvée Vendémiaire bursts with lively aromas of green apple, lemon oil, wet stones and blanched almonds. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, bright and incisive, with a crisp, elegantly tight-knit core of fruit, ripe but tangy acids and a vibrant, delicately chalky finish. It's entirely Chardonnay, from Vertus, Les Mesnil, Oger, Avize and Cramant.
